  • Snowpocalypse 2019

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

On the afternoon of March 12, it seemed as if spring was just around the corner. The premonition of famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinaire (author's note: this is the full name of Punxsutawney Phil) seemed to be coming to fruition. With the official start of spring a week away and temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it did not seem as if a storm was on the way. Of course, what does a marmot...

  • Zoning hole and special use flowers

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

Despite just barely having a quorum, the Saratoga Planning Commission was able to move through their agenda with relative ease on the evening of March 12 at the Saratoga Town Hall. Acting Chairman Tom Westring and town council representative Bob Keel were joined via phone by planning commission member Jim Beckmann via phone as they heard from Louis Waits, co-owner of the Flower Pot, and discussed the soon-to-be vacant zoning officer position and the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the...

The Hanna Town Council got a late start on March 12 at the Hanna Town Hall. The meeting was to start at 6 p.m., but had a delay of about 20 minutes to have a quorum. Mayor Lois Buchanan and council member Bob Patton waited for council member Sammy Sikes to show up. Once he did, the council started. Council members Tracy Fowler and Linda Schisel did not attend the meeting that evening. Buchanan told the council that she had attended the High Country Joint Powers Board as the temporary Hanna...

  • Wyoming in script–but off screen

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

Have you ever noticed that a lot of movies, or television series, that are supposed to take place in Wyoming look a lot like somewhere else? While I may not be a Wyoming native, I still consider the area to be my home state and I will often jump at the chance to see a movie or television show that is set here. Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t quite have a Wyoming feel to them. When I was watching “Wind River,” the only frame in the entire movie that seemed to be filmed in Wyoming was the e... Full story

  • Farver to head Down Under

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

If going to Australia is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, being able to go and play your favorite sport at the same time can't even be measured. The chance to do just that is at the fingertips of Encampment student Lindsie Farver after being invited by Down Under Sports to play volleyball. Farver, who is a sophomore in high school, received the invitation during lunch just before Christmas. "I actually didn't believe it. I was like 'Australia? What is this talking about?' I thought it was junk...

  • Plowing out

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

The roads in Encampment were cleared off enough Thursday evening for the Encampment Town Council to hold their regular meeting where they thanked the Department of Public Works (DPW) for the work done on clearing the streets. Mayor Greg Salisbury and the council, absent Bill Craig, also heard an update from Jon Nelson, of North Fork Engineering, on the progress of the sewer lagoon project. While the snowfall began to dissipate on Thursday morning, there was still plenty of it for the Encampment...

  • Reviewing rates

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

Despite the weather, the Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (CCIJPB) was able to hold their regularly scheduled meeting on March 13 at Saratoga Town Hall. The topic of the water ordinance and water rates were, again, the central point of discussion at the meeting as the joint powers board continues to move forward with re-examining the current rate structure. Due to the blizzard, the Saratoga Sun was not in attendance, but spoke with CCIJPB member Roger Cox and Saratoga Town Council member...

  • Mixing education

    Mike Armstrong|Mar 20, 2019

Students that learn at home have different reasons to do so. It is not necessarily popular with public school administrators that have small school populations to begin with, but in Carbon County School District No. 2, (CCSD2) there is an effort between the school system and parents to make sure the students get the best education no–matter where they actually sit down and learn. A Principal's View Traci Schneider, principal for Elk Mountain, Hanna and Medicine Bow elementary schools said she w...

  • Tiger track off and running

    Joshua Wood and Lauren Buford|Mar 20, 2019

The 2018/2019 track season for the Encampment Tigers is off and running for the year. With six upperclassmen and 14 underclassmen, the predominantly young team is out to prove that, despite their youth, they are ready to get some victories. With ten meets this season, the Tigers will get the chance to prove themselves as the season progresses. Kegan Willford, head coach of Encampment track, is expecting to see points in both distance and mid-stance categories as he is seeing several returning...

  • Hopes high for Saratoga track

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

Last year, the Saratoga Panthers track and field team had nearly 40 athlete competing in various events. This year, that number is down to 29, which is still a formidable number, especially when considering that many of the returning athletes have competed in the past. There are still open slots, however, left by students who graduated. "We lost a couple of key ones from last year. We lost Ashlynn (Johnson), off the girls, which she did a lot of relays and events and Ben Fairbanks covered a lot...

  • Hanna track in training

    Mike Armstrong|Mar 20, 2019

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School track is out practicing outside when the weather permits, but if not, head coach Jackie Jones has them at the Hanna Recreation Center swimming for cardio or at HEM's gym doing drills and playing games that get their bodies ready for meet competition. Jones knows this time of year is hard to get outside practices in, but she is excited about the team being fielded this year and wants them to get the best workouts she can provide before the...

  • Tigers place two

    Joshua Wood|Mar 20, 2019

A blizzard descending upon the Valley didn’t keep the Encampment Tigers from sending five members of their track team to Pavillion to compete in the Wind River Invite on Saturday. “We had a small team this week due to most of our athletes not having enough practices,” said Kegan Willford, head coach of Encampment track. Despite the small team, Encampment made its presence known as two members of the team placed in three events over the weekend. Dalton Peterson placed 6th in shot put with a dista...
