  • Baskets for Bokelman benefits coach

    Erik Gantt|Feb 3, 2016

"Five-hundred and fifty dollars for just one day's work is amazing," Kelly Horn said of Saturday's fundraising for Lady Panthers head coach Scott Bokelman. Bokelman was recently diagnosed with thyroid lymphoma and is currently recovering from surgery in Scottsbluff, Neb. under the care of his brother, who is a nurse. "The girls were the ones, right from the get-go, who said 'Can we please do something for coach?'" Horn said on Monday. The team and coaches borrowed an idea from Hanna's halftime...

  • Lucas devices on board

    Erik Gantt|Feb 3, 2016

The South Central Wyoming Emergency Medical Service (SCWEMS) recently received four machines that will help save lives in Carbon County. Lucas devices are machines that perform chest compressions necessary in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and allow emergency responders to administer defibrillation shocks concurrently with CPR. It is important to the ambulance service, according to SCWEMS Ambulance Director Heidi Sifford, because, "In a cardiac arrest the only two proven things that show...

  • Memories of Dave Starr

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

Many people may have not recognized David Starr by his name, but it is likely that everyone in the Platte Valley interacted with him at one time or another. Dave passed away Dec. 13, 2015. He worked the night shift at Kum & Go in Saratoga. He always greeted every one with a smile. That was how Dave was, John Zeiger, long-time friend and sometimes co-worker of Dave’s. John and Dave knew each other for close to 50 years. Dave was a couple of years ahead of John in school, but the friendship b...

  • The final salute

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016
    1

In November, a special friend of mine passed away. He was a comrade in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6125. The VFW had the honor of giving him his final send off – with a 21-gun salute. What made it more endearing was his grandniece playing taps at the end of the ceremony. H.R. (Bob) Herring, was one of 16 children, some of whom still live in the Platte Valley. The first time I met Bob was at a VFW meeting. Dick Ament had invited me to come down and I sat next to Bob’s wife Bobbie. She p...

  • HEM's Wyatt gets Heisman

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

Wyatt Phillips, a senior at Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow high school (HEM), was told that high school was going to be tough. In the end, he learned that with a little effort, it wasn't as hard as everyone cracked it up to be. Phillips was the Wyoming state winner for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award, which recognizes excellent high school performance in sports, academics and community leadership. He was nominated for consideration for the national award as only one of 100 other students...

The Saratoga Speech and Debate team is currently undefeated in the 1A/2A category, according to assistant coach Kate Sherrod. The Panthers had a big meet in Casper last weekend, where they took first place among 1A/2A schools. Jacob Dickinson, Encampment K-12 School senior, took first place in a very large field for his original oratory on the importance of human touch. According to head coach Jacob Mickelsen, the first place win could be attributed to Dickinson, as the Carbon County School...

  • Garden needs seed money

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

The Saratoga Community Garden Board knows what they need to do to take their gardening to the next level, but the age-old concern of how to pay for it prevents immediate action. Money isn’t the only concern—the pollinator mounds that should be up during the spring are paid for by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant. Grant funding allows the garden to hire three high school students for science enrichment and paid work. The garden still needs to collect volunteers to set up four tot...

  • A peer-reviewed study of Star Wars

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

he Star Wars franchise, I’ve heard, is one of the most pervasive cultural reference systems in modern America. I don’t believe you can fully understand that unless you grew up never having seen it, watching the films for the first time in your 20s. That’s what I did. When Luke, alongside Yoda, is trying to use The Force1 to raise a submerged spaceship2 from the swamp3 in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda famously says “Do or do not. There is no try.” I had no idea that was from Star Wars. Instead,...

  • Mental toughness key for varsity wrestlers

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

The Saratoga Panther wrestlers proved once more they can hold their own against any team. Head coach Jared Mason commended the boys on a successful weekend once more at the Bridgerland Duals in Lyman. Thatcher Spiering, Bradley Bifano and Jaxon King were all undefeated at the duals, a tournament where teams in their entirety go head to head against one another in each weight class. With a small team, the Panthers ended up with several forfeits because they do not have a wrestler for every...

  • Encampment firmly holds on to No. 1 conference spot

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

The Encampment Tigers proved this weekend they are a force to be reckoned with, even though Encampment Coach Clint Bromley felt the team could have played better. Sickness and injuries have prevented the Tigers (3-0 conference, 14-1 overall) from playing at their best, but it didn't keep them from winning against Rock River (1-2, 5-10) Friday night. In the 58-18 blowout, the Tigers dominated the Longhorns in Rock River. KeeGan Johnson led scoring with 22 points. He also had eight rebounds, four...

  • Tigers win on road, loses at home

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers split their games over the weekend and with the loss dropped to No. 3 in the 1A Southwest Conference. The Encampment team (1-2 conference, 12-3 overall) now has a good idea of what they will have to work on to get ready for regionals at the end of the month. In the Rock River game, Encampment dominated the Longhorns, with Alyssa Barkhurst putting up more nearly as many points as the entire Longhorn team. In the 48-27 win, Barkhurst scored 25 points. Her game record is...

  • Lady Panthers are unified

    Erik Gantt|Feb 3, 2016

Head coach Heather Bartlett said her Saratoga Lady Panthers are unified in the face of switching coaches mid-season. Scott Bokelman started the season with the girls but his cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery has kept him off the court. Saturday's home game in Saratoga saw the beginning of fund raising led by the Lady Panthers that will continue at every home game for the rest of this season. In spite of what Bartlett said she sees as the Lady Panthers (0-4 conference, 3-9 overall) putting...

  • Panthers raise heart rates

    Erik Gantt|Feb 3, 2016

Watching the Saratoga Panthers varsity team on Saturday was like watching the Denver Broncos, stressful. The Panthers (0-4 conference, 1-12 overall) came out fighting against the Cyclones (2-1, 5-9) keeping the game tied over the first four minutes before pulling ahead with 3:46 left in the first quarter. The Panthers tied the game at 16 all with 2:33 left in the first quarter and held their ground until the Cyclones drained two from the line with 55.5 seconds left. The Panthers never caught bac...
