  • No free lunch?

    Joshua Wood|Jan 30, 2019

Carbon County School District (CCSD) No. 2, at last count, had 607 students enrolled in seven schools. Of those, approximately 247 students, or 41 percent, receive free or reduced lunches at school. The program, which is federally funded, is at risk of disappearing due to the partial government shutdown that recently surpassed the one month mark. “The information we have is that the money is available through March,” said CCSD No. 2 Superintendent Jim Copeland. “Now, I don’t expect it...

  • Lady Tigers drop two

    Joshua Wood|Jan 30, 2019

The seven-member Encampment Lady Tigers continued to work on finding their footing on the hardwood as they hosted the Rock River Lady Longhorns (14-2, 0-1) on Friday evening and the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers (5-7, 2-1) at noon on Saturday. Both games saw the girls fight on their home court, but ultimately lose both games. Lady Tigers vs. Lady Longhorns "We came out flat in this game and never really got it going throughout the whole game," said Clint Bromley, head coach of t...

  • Getting aggressive

    Joshua Wood|Jan 30, 2019

The Saratoga Lady Panthers haven't had the easiest season so far. As they progress through each game, it seems they are just beginning to find what works before the other team adapts and is able to run the court. Such was the case on Thursday evening, when the Lady Panthers hosted the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers and appeared, several times, like they might finally get a conference win. "I thought we had flashes of brilliance where we would do so good sometimes and then we...

  • Rampages down Pat

    Keith McLendon|Jan 30, 2019

I got a text with a meme in it from a friend the Monday after the Eneffelle division championships were completed last Sunday. It was a photo of Forrest Gump. Above the photo were the words, “and just like that,” below the face was, “we are now all Rams fans!” My exact reply was, “Damn straight!” Belicheat and Co. You may be able to tell I am no fan of the New England Patriots. I begrudgingly admit they are good—if not even great. I just don’t care for a coach (Bill “What...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 30, 2019

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners played one game this weekend due to Dubois forfeiting their game on Friday. The Lady Miners won against Rock River on Saturday 47-32. "We were able to jump out to a pretty good lead to start the game 11-0," Head HEM girls basketball coach said. "You know in all fairness, it might have caught both teams off guard." She acknowledged the Lady Longhorns were missing a starter for this game. "There is absolutely no question them losing Taylor...

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School boys basketball team faced Dubois at 3 p.m. on Friday in Dubois and Rock River at noon on Saturday at the HEM gym and came out on top in both competitions. Dubois lost 57-35. HEM head coach Cliff Jones said the team played well, but felt there was improvement needed inside the paint. "For whatever reason, we are struggling shooting the basketball inside," Jones said. "We have missed a lot of point blank shots, so we just have to get more...

  • Panthers fly high against tough teams

    Joshua Wood|Jan 30, 2019

With seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, and with the Saratoga Panthers already ahead of the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers by double digits, senior Sam Schneider dashed down the court with the ball. His stride increased with each step. In the stands, Panther fans knew what was about to happen and they got to their feet. Schneider planted his foot one last time ... Lift off! Schneider soared through the air, ball in hand, and flew towards the basket. His fingers gripped the rim, whi...

  • Tigers retake top

    Joshua Wood|Jan 30, 2019

The Encampment Tigers didn't let their loss against the Farson-Eden Pronghorns last weekend keep them down for long as they came roaring back onto their home court with a 62-point lead against the Rock River Longhorns (4-9, 0-1) on Friday and celebrated their second victory against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers (7-7, 0-4) on Saturday, propelling the Tigers back to the No. 1 spot in the 1A Southwest Conference as the Pronghorns lost to the Cokeville Panthers over the weekend by 1...

The leading scorer for the Lady Miners was Madison Campbell with 15 points. “Madison led the way with 15 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots,” Jones said. The Lady Vikings have not had a great season being 2-10...

  • Wresting with injuries

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 30, 2019

“Ron Thon tournament has the best of the best competing,” Saratoga Head Wrestling Coach Zach Schmidt said. “It was too bad we could only send 3 wrestlers into the tournament because we have been hit with injuries.” Jerry Everett, Andrew Everett and Tristan Gray were the only grapplers healthy enough to compete. Justin Shotwell and Trezdon Martinez did go to Ron Thon to give support, but both have injuries that kept them from competing. “Justin is nursing a back injury and Trez a should...

  • Shooting for the record

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 30, 2019

Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School basketball player Conor McGraw hit a benchmark 1,000 points against Guernsey on Jan. 19 in a 52-27 Miners win. What makes this all the more impressive is that this feat has been accomplished in McGraw's junior year in the middle of the season. "I don't keep track of stats so I didn't even know where I was in points," McGraw said. "Mr. Jones pulled me over and asked me if I could score one more basket and I said 'sure' and went back on court."...
