  • Reliability and permanence, or, why legals still have a place in newsprint

    Keith McLendon|Jan 30, 2013

The other day someone on the radio said legals in the paper were no longer necessary. He argued legal notices could be “printed” for free on the internet and that no one noticed them in the newspaper anyway. I can’t prove he said that, I have no written transcript of what the gentleman actually said. I was even told these comments were edited for the later-in-the-day broadcast. As far as not being noticed in the paper ... Do you really think they would be MORE noticed on the web or the radio...

  • A standing ovation for the Clinic

    Jan 30, 2013

Editor: I think we need a round of applause ... a standing ovation, for the whole staff at the medical clinic. Last week I was just sure I would have to get better to die, when a dear friend cleverly tricked me into going to get checked out. No miracle cure, it was the flu. From my bed and back, I was in and out of the Clinic within an hour. It does not matter if you are coming into this world, on your way home to your Creator or some point in between, you are met with genuine concern and willingness to go the distance to find a solution to...

  • Ramping up school security

    Joe Elder|Jan 30, 2013

School security is always something Superintendent Bob Gates, Carbon County School District #2 Board of Directors and principals talk about, but events like the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut put the conversation front and center. The challenge is to put some practical procedures in place without creating a logistical nightmare. Short of turning them into a prison and drastically restructuring students’ educational experience, there is no way to make schools c...

  • G&F seeks public input on herd management

    Liz Wood|Jan 30, 2013

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (G&F) has been compiling data for years to determine how many elk and moose are on the ground in local hunting areas. On Monday, Will Schultz, G&F biologist, shared data compiled after the 2011 harvest. In the Snowy Range Elk Hunt Area, which includes hunt areas 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 110, 114 and 125, the goal has been 6,000 head of elk. Schultz explained how the G&F measure the herds using classifications of age and sex, surveying elk from a helicopter and from...

  • Rolling with the stone

    Joe Elder|Jan 30, 2013

Walking into Jerry Wood’s studio is like walking into another era. The still grace of the sculptures themselves are the only suggestion of movement, except for the carver himself surrounded by the chink, chink of hammer and chisel on stone. Dust floats in the air and comes to rest like a skiff of sepia-colored snow on finished and half-finished pieces. Wood will be showing 20 sculptures at a solo exhibition at the Community Fine Arts Center in Rock Springs for the month of February. The s...

Taylor Smith scored a career high of 26 points in the Lady Panthers 58-42 win against Hanna-Elk-Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) Friday night in the Miner’s court. “I didn’t want to lose,” Smith said “so I took a chance and luckily it fell for me.” Smith had 60 percent shooting from beyond the arc sinking three out of five attempts. “It started a fire on the floor,” Smith said “and everybody started taking chances.” The chances paid off big with the Lady Panthers outscoring the miners in the third...

The Saratoga Panthers (6-10) played a tight game against Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) (1-14) Friday in the Miners’ court ending the first quarter at a tie of 11. “Hanna played well,” head coach Josh Sandlian said. “Every time HEM gets better we see what we are able to do to get the win.” The Panthers took an early lead in the second quarter and held onto it for most of the second quarter before HEM put on the pressure and closed the lead to two points ending the half at 21-19. “D...

  • Tigers win one, lose one

    Brian Trautwein|Jan 30, 2013

The Encampment Tigers played two non-conference games last week. The first game, last Tuesday, was a fast-paced game against the North Park Wildcats. Senior Waddie Love played in his last high school game do to a re-injury of his ankle. Love made the decision to have the injury fixed so he can pursue an athletic career after this year. “It’s pretty emotional for me; it’s like watching his last football game” Scott Love, Waddie’s dad, said with a smile before the game. “It’s been a fun ride and...

  • Town looks to add recreational path

    Joe Elder|Jan 30, 2013

A proposed walking path from Veterans Island to Sandy Beach at Saratoga Lake got a boost when the Saratoga Town Council passed a resolution, at Recreation Director Lisa Burton’s request, to approve submission of a $2,500 grant to help cover the total estimated cost of $8,160 dollars. The remaining $5,560 would come out of the town’s budget and the town would provide labor and equipment. Burton applied for the grant last year, but it was not funded. The grant is administered by the Wyoming Com...

    Brian Trautwein|Jan 30, 2013

The Encampment Lady Tigers took on North Park and Rock River last week. The Tigers played much better basketball this week and the scores reflected the progress. The last time Encampment played North Park they were beaten by 30. This time the Lady Tigers fell just 4 points short of beating the Wildcats. Alyssa Barkhurst scored well in the first and second quarters and the whole offense was passing the ball around and making good decisions about the shots they took. At the end of the first...

  • Grapplers dominate on home mats

    Brian Trautwein|Jan 30, 2013

The Panther wrestlers hosted a wrestling meet Thursday. The grapplers put 10 men on the mat, and although not everyone had wins, the wrestlers were obviously fired up. The meet was a Quadrangular, more of a practice than a regular meet, and the results don’t count toward conference records, only personal records. Nonetheless, the grapplers had 36 matches and won 24 of them. “When you get to wrestle at home only once or twice a year, it’s pretty easy to get excited to wrestle at home,” coach Jare...

  • The pig was a hoot

    Jan 30, 2013

It is Monday and we had a little snow fall during the night. It is so pretty to see the fresh white stuff, especially when it covers all that dirty ice and slush. Did you make it over for the Winter Carnival? Well, I didn’t get in on any activities, but I did a drive by to check out the snow sculptures. That pig was a hoot! The activities last week were…active. There were five for bridge. But, the girls share very nicely and everyone had a turn to play. Evelyn, Sheila, Rosemary, Katy and Vivien played to see who would get those quarters. I’m... Full story
