  • Chariots out ... Next?

    FW Broschart|Jan 25, 2017

Chariot Races, long a favorite winter event in the Valley for over 30 years, will not be held this year. But a new event called skijoring is coming into the Valley with the hopes of combining equestrian riding and skiing while drawing visitors to Saratoga. Organizers of the chariot races said there were not enough competitors for chariot racing to make the event feasible. Will Faust, a member of the Saratoga Lion's Club, sponsor of the chariot races, said, in his opinion, shifts in tastes have... Full story

  • Bed bid bought

    Max Miller|Jan 25, 2017

At a Jan. 17 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, mayor Ed Glode revealed long-awaited details of a gravel bar removal operation in the North Platte River upstream of the HWY 130 bridge. Dixon-based Ready Oilfield Service (ROS) won a town contract for the job, offering a price just north of $133,000–a third higher than the $100,000 cost Glode anticipated in November. Four other contractors offered bids for the work, and three (including ROS) were selected for further interview in the weeks l... Full story

  • Larceny on Bridge Street

    Jan 25, 2017

Saratoga Police are investigating an attempted larceny or shoplifting that occurred Jan. 14 at Bridge Street Bargains downtown. Saratoga Chief of Police Robert Bifano said store employees called authorities after a male customer attempted to flee the store with a bag of clothing that had not been paid for, as well as a donation jar. Most of the items were recovered after two bystanders followed the suspect, who dropped most of the items into a trash receptacle. Carol Beach, manager of Bridge Street Bargains, said the incident occurred close to... Full story

  • The long way 'round, part 4

    Max Miller|Jan 25, 2017

After my clothes had dried from the river and I'd eaten lunch, I remounted my bike and set off alone once again, the sound of strange birds riding a light breeze alongside me. Things started off well enough. This side of the river featured lots of prairie alongside the marsh and woods, and when I pedaled fast through the tall grass I felt like I was skimming the top of a green ocean. The little trails I followed were obviously seldom used, and though the monsoon-season flood waters kept me out... Full story

We have all heard of the “Seven Wonders of the World,” in fact there are at least four lists of what those wonders are, with all of them being different. I would like to add the Hot Pool to any one of those lists. You see I can’t think of many wonders such as we have in Saratoga that is open twenty-four hours a day and free of charge. Although the Hot Pool is maintained by the town it belongs to all of us. It is something we should be proud to have and treat it like it is our own. I would like to issue a challenge to the citizens of Sarat... Full story

  • Wind spins forward

    FW Broschart|Jan 25, 2017

The first couple weeks of 2017 have been topsy-turvy time for wind energy firms in Wyoming, and those that hope to be operating in the state soon. The year started out with State legislature file 127. That bill proposed increasing the state’s tax on wind energy generation from $1 to $5 per megawatt hour. Another bill proposed in the legislature would essentially penalize local utilities who purchase green energy from producers. Yet despite these spots of bad news, Power Company of Wyoming (PCW) received good news in form of the BLM issuing a f... Full story

  • Tigers on top for weekend

    Jan 25, 2017

Last week, Encampment High School boys and girls basketball teams came off a tough post-homecoming week to sweep their rivals from North Park in Colorado, as well as Valley and conference rivals Saratoga. With their winning streak, the Tigers proved that, for the week at least, they were toughest cats in the Valley, besting the North Park Wildcats and the Saratoga Panthers. Encampment even managed to deliver the wins despite the fact that the teams were stricken by a spate of illnesses,... Full story

  • Regrouping after losses, illness

    Max Miller|Jan 25, 2017

A pair of weekend losses augured the start of poor health for the Saratoga Panthers boys basketball team, who were missing half their roster to illness by practice Monday. The Panthers fell 53-43 in Encampment Friday, then lost 66-58 to basketball powerhouse Kaycee at home the next afternoon. "I think it was maybe one of those games where we wanted to win so bad that we–especially the first half–just didn't play so well," said coach Jason Williams, referring to the Encampment game. "We sur... Full story

  • Saratoga splits weekend

    Max Miller|Jan 25, 2017

Despite missing two players to illness and one to injury, the Saratoga High School girls' basketball team managed to split games over the weekend. While the Panthers lost 48-32 in Encampment Friday, they logged a comeback victory against Kaycee at home Saturday, ultimately taking that game by about 20 points. "I felt like the girls played really well in Encampment. I was really pleased by their effort even though it wasn't a win for us," said Panthers coach Heather Bartlett. "They just played... Full story

  • Illness pins grapplers' hopes

    Max Miller|Jan 25, 2017

Diminished by an illness that also swept through other Saratoga High School (SHS) sports teams, the Panthers wrestling program had a disappointing weekend at the Lander Invite. Though senior Thomas Ingraham took home a third-place finish, the other three varsity grapplers for SHS couldn’t place amongst tough 3A and 4A competition at the Jan. 20-21 tournament. With Ingraham’s third-place finish at Lander, “he put himself right there in terms of being one of the top-two 152-pounders in the State... Full story
