  • A place in the community

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

It’s rather hard to believe that I have, officially, been working for the Saratoga Sun for one year. I remember being anxious the night before and being even more anxious as I waited outside the office in my car. I had no idea if I would do well, if anyone would enjoy reading what I wrote or if I would even find my place in the community. Now, a year later, I’m still anxious and still nervous, but at least I know that people are reading what I write. I’ve had people approach me when I’m out and...

  • The once and future mayor

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 23, 2019

John Zeiger, the newly elected mayor of Saratoga, said he was somewhat surprised when he won in November. "It was a pleasant surprise when it was apparent I won," Zeiger said. "I thought it would be close, but I thought it would be the other way around." Zeiger said the reason he got into the race in the very beginning was he felt that the residents of Saratoga needed a choice to vote for mayor. "It wasn't until the Saturday before the primaries that I even decided to even shoot for the write...

"It made my sleep a little harder, although I was happy." Buchanan said her slogan during the campaign was "pride and passion". "I wanted residents to take pride in their properties and do it with a passion," Buchanan said. "Now I want to enforce the o...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 23, 2019

The weather didn’t stop the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School basketball team from traveling to Guernsey on Saturday to face the Vikings. The Guernsey team has not been winning many games and the Miners kept it that way, winning 52-27. Head coach Cliff Jones was happy with what he saw on several fronts. “We played well considering it was just our third game in the last month,” Jones said. He said the defensive effort was improving. “I thought our defensive effort was much bette...

  • Can't talk your way out of weather

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

The Wyoming winter weather waylaid the Saratoga Speech and Debate team as they were forced to cancel their trip to Cheyenne to compete in the Cheyenne Central Invite over the weekend. The next venture out of the Valley for the talk jocks will be on the weekend of Feb. 1 as they return to Casper, this time to compete in the Natrona County Invite....

  • Facing Farson-Eden

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

Encampment Tigers and Lady Tigers each only had one game this weekend, despite having two scheduled as they were prepared to host two conference rivals; Cokeville on Friday and Farson-Eden on Saturday. Due to the weather, however, the Friday game against the Cokeville Panthers and Cokeville Lady Panthers was unable to take place. Tiger Nation was still able to host the Pronghorns and Lady Pronghorns on Saturday, however, where they struggled with two losses as both Tigers and Lady Tigers fell...

  • Punching above their weight

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

This past weekend, I didn’t get the chance to watch Encampment host Farson-Eden, nor was I able to observe Saratoga host Cokeville. It wasn’t because I was out on the ice at Saratoga Lake, but because I was in Cheyenne. Over the weekend, Keith McLendon and myself attended the 120th Wyoming Press Association winter convention. Despite not being present for games of the teams I love to cover, high school sports was still a topic of discussion with other Wyoming newspapers. It is evident to tho...

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

While the Saratoga Panthers and Lady Panthers had a “white out” game planned against Farson-Eden Pronghorns and Lady Pronghorns on Friday, it was not the type of whiteout they were expecting as Wyoming’s winter weather closed roads and prevented the two teams from playing. Reaching out to Saratoga Middle/High School Activities Director Greg Bartlett on Monday, the Saratoga Sun was informed that a makeup game had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. Though they had to resch...

  • Pint-sized piscators

    Joshua Wood|Jan 23, 2019

The forecast for Saturday Jan. 12 was one of clear skies and plenty of sunshine. That morning, however, was the exact opposite as a chilling fog had moved into the Valley overnight. Despite the cold and foggy morning, both children and adults gathered on the 16 inch thick ice at Treasure Island pond, usually visible from Highway 230, for Mother Mountain Anglers' (MMA) 3rd Annual Kid's Ice Fishing Clinic. Adolescent anglers, and their parents, listened closely as Biff Burton, game warden with the...
