The Saratoga Sun received word Monday that Ray Walker has died. Ray was born Jan. 15, 1942 to Len and Gerry Walker, owners of the Freeland Cattle Co. on Pass Creek, which is now the TA Ranch headquarters. June E. Wenger, 89, of Saratoga, formerly of Butte, Mont., passed away on Jan. 17, 2013, at the Valley View Nursing Center in Saratoga. She had worked as a secretary and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Saratoga. June enjoyed painting and writing letters to friends, and is remembered as a lady who always enjoyed bringing laughter into other’s lives. Encampment Police Chief Nick Finer gave the Encampment council a letter of resignation at their meeting Jan. 10. Finer said he flew when he was in the Army and was resigning to pursue a career in aviation. His last day will be Jan. 31. Members of the public applauded after Councilman Steve Wilcoxson read from two letters at the Saratoga Town Council meeting Tuesday. The first was one he had written to the Planning Commission to apologize for his behavior at its Dec. 11 meeting. The Carbon County School District No. 2 Speech Team traveled to Cheyenne Jan. 18 and 19 for a speech competition hosted by Laramie County Community College and Cheyenne Central High School. Geoff Page and Colton Woolfolk earned a first place title with their humorous duet “Dueling Phobias”. Woolfolk also competed in the Improv category. This weekend I attended my eighth Wyoming Press Association Convention. It seems hard to believe I have been working at the Saratoga Sun this long. Time flies when you are having fun. In November, the staff at the Saratoga Sun went through the newspapers from Nov. 1, 2011 through Oct. 31, 2012 and tried to decide which articles and photos are the best. Recently, the Saratoga Town Council and the Saratoga Planning Commission have taken action that appears to seek to limit public involvement at their meetings. In both cases, the reason given for the changes was to generate more productivity among the board and council members and allow them to be more effective at their jobs. The Saratoga Search and Rescue will put on it’s fifth annual Poker Run Jan. 26. The poker run started in 2009 and brings in up to 100 participants annually. Jennifer German, on organizer Marty Huntley’s behalf, said, “We have a steady turn out every year. The annual Xi Beta Delta Casino Night will be held in conjunction with the 27th annual Sierra Madre Winter Carnival this weekend. Casino Night will begin at the Opera House in Encampment on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. For $15, gamblers will get $25,000 worth of “funny money” to use at a variety of games over the course of the evening. The weather was perfect for the 30th annual Ice Fishing Derby. Saturday and Sunday the skies were blue and the wind hardly whispered its name at Saratoga Lake where 585 contestants tried their luck for the prize money. With temperatures ranging between 35-40 degrees, it seemed a heat wave had descended upon the derby after below zero temperatures the week before. The Saratoga grapplers traveled to Lingle to compete in the Dogger Invitational held Friday and Saturday. The flu bug and lambing season reduced the Panther’s squad and with only eight competing, the wrestlers were under-staffed for the invite. After a two-week break, the Encampment Lady Tigers (1-10) (0-3) were back on the court Friday and Saturday for two conference match-ups against Cokeville (11-1) (4-0) and Farson-Eden (6-6) (2-2). The Tigers dropped the first of the two matches to Cokeville who are undefeated in conference play, and have only lost one game on the season. The Lady Panthers had two games last week against Southeast on Friday and Little Snake River on Saturday. It was a beautiful day Saturday for the Saratoga Resort and Spa’s annual Snowy Range Poker Run. Forty participants tried their luck while enjoying a sunny day in the Snowies. The Poker Run raised $600 for the local Search and Rescue organizations with half donated to Saratoga half donated to Ryan Park. The Mens’ Panther basketball team continued their play with a conference road game on Friday night against Southeast and then hosted the Little Snake River Rattlers on Saturday afternoon.
