  • Evergreen keeps trucking

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

Evergreen Disposal was briefly handicapped over the weekend following a fire in one of their garbage trucks, but the Encampment-based trash hauler is showing that they won't be kept down for long. At approximately 5:45 p.m. on January 16, the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) was called to respond to reports of a fire at 210 N. State Street in Saratoga. A fire in one of the garbage trucks was observed upon arrival and the fire was eventually extinguished. The garbage truck was one of...

The Carbon County Council of Governments (CCCOG) met at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Rawlins for their regularly scheduled meeting. CCCOG usually meets every other month, but met in December to make up for the November meeting that had been canceled due to weather. Although there were several towns not represented, there were enough representatives for a quorum. The council quickly approved the minutes from the December 18 meeting and the agenda. The treasurer’s report was approved next after Travi...

  • Investing in your hometown

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

“How strange it is to view a town you grew up in, not in wonderment through the eyes of youth, but with the eyes of a historian on the way things were.” ~ Marvin Allan Williams A couple weeks ago, I had a conversation with a former high school classmate. We discussed a variety of things, but the one topic we seemed to discuss most was growing up in and returning to the Valley. Not only that, but the realization we had both come to that we now had a responsibility to be the change we want to see... Full story

  • NP Bids Farewell

    Jan 22, 2020

Dear Editor, I write this letter with a heavy heart, while I prepare to leave Saratoga for a new job. I came to Saratoga last March to join the healthcare staff at Platte Valley Clinic. I came here under the pretense the town was moving towards establishing a critical access hospital. In that time, I have seen and participated in the passionate debate of moving forward with the CAH. I have listened as misinformation has been spread, and what appears on the surface, to be conflicts of interest for whatever the underlying reasons. There has been... Full story

  • The Saratoga Sun's New Logo

    Dana Davis|Jan 22, 2020

Welcome back to the 20’s! Since we are in the new decade of 2020, I thought it was appropriate to pay homage to the art movement of the 1920s, Art Deco. It is an art movement that touched almost every trade in the 1920s and 30s; architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion, painting, graphic arts and even film. The 1920s was a time of Industrial Revolution and progress. People were becoming wealthy. The generation know at the Lost Generation wanted more from life since many had come...

  • Saratoga deals loss to Wildcats

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

On Friday, the Saratoga Panthers were able to hit the road despite the winter weather as they crossed the border into Walden, Colorado to face the North Park Wildcats. Not only did the Panthers beat Old Man Winter, but they also dealt a loss to North Park. “I was pleased with how the boys played Friday,” said Jason Williams, head coach of the Panthers. “Walden can be a tough place to play but the boys came out and played with good energy and executed well.” It would appear that both element...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 22, 2020

On January 14, the Rawlins JV boys and girls basketball teams came to Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School to take on the Miner teams. Lady Miners The Lady Outlaws had some players that were tall and big in comparison to HEM. They looked to be a varsity team as they came out guns-a-blazing. The smaller HEM team had their work cut out for them. At first the Lady Miners pulled ahead in the first quarter and the Lady Outlaws found themselves 13-8 going into the next quarter. A...

Cale Mowry, who wrestled at 106 pounds, was a wrestler who may not have gotten points but got the...

  • Tigers defang Rattlers

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

The Encampment Tigers were forced to play a Monday game following road closures preventing conference rivals the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers from getting to Tiger Nation on Saturday. Despite the rescheduled game, the Tigers came onto their homecourt ready to play and were quick to hit the hardwood. "I think both teams played pretty hard," said senior Dayne Anderson. "They play hard but we knew they played hard. Both teams played really well I think." Encampment was quick to throw...

  • Seeing the good moments

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

High winds and winter storms not only forced the closure of roads over the weekend, but also extended homecoming week for the Encampment Lady Tigers as they had to reschedule their game against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers. Originally set for Saturday, Encampment hosted the Lady Rattlers on Monday evening. LSRV would ultimately leave Tiger Nation with a win. "I definitely think that we were all pretty off our game. It definitely was a Monday," said junior Shiann Finney....

  • MHCC moving forward with clinic

    Joshua Wood|Jan 22, 2020

Plans for Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC) to establish a clinic in Saratoga appear to be moving forward, though not with the property in which MHCC had originally shown interest. As was reported previously (see “Medical debate continues” on page 1 of the November 27, 2019 Saratoga Sun), MHCC interim CEO Bob Quist had appeared before the Saratoga Town Council on November 19 to express int...
