Based on the number of participants the 2015 Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby was a success. Stacy Crimmins, chief executive officer of the Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce, reported there were 879 registered fishermen at the event and about 200 ancillary attendees. Elsie Hepner, 84, of Casper, Wyo. and formerly of Saratoga, passed away at the Wyoming Medical Center surrounded by loving family. She was born to Clyde Dayton Ankney and Delpha Mae Ankney on May 7, 1930 in New Philadelphia, Ohio. She married her husband, the late Harry L. Hepner Jr in Ohio. Herbert Douglas Viner passed away on Jan. 14, 2015. Herbert was born July 25, 1928 in Laramie, the first son of Frank Lott Viner Jr., and Aleen Fanning Viner. He served on board the USS Alabama at the very end of WWII and lived nearly all of his life in West Laramie. Mr. Viner was the custodian at the University of Wyoming’s Coe Library for nearly 30 years. Sierra Madre Winter Carnival organizer Alyson Sneddon is hoping for people to do snow dances this week. The lack of snow has made the Sierra Madre Winter Carnival a bit of a challenge for the past several years. “Get your snow dance shoes on and pray for snow,” Sneddon said. In the first conference meet of the year, the Saratoga Panther wrestlers got a chance to see how they rank in the state. Six of the eight wrestlers placed. Thomas Ingraham grabbed the first place trophy for the 132-pound weight class, the largest class of the tournament with 25 grapplers.
