  • Third time's a charm:

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The winning fish wasn't the biggest fish that has come out of Saratoga Lake, but with a score of 35, it was the winner for this year. Tammy Guerra, of Parker, Colo., could be the first woman in the 33-year history of the fishing derby to win the tournament. The chamber has records back to 1993, and the only woman to place in the top three was Encampment's Maureen Zeiger, who won third place in 2012. Not only does Guerra have a $2,000 check to take home, she has a pretty good fish story to go wit...

  • Finalizing the hangar lease agreement

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 20, 2016

Last Thursday, Andy Van Tol presented changes to the lease agreement in order to resolve issues of renewal and termination in ways that make sense, especially tax-wise, for hangar owners. The Saratoga Airport Board was satisfied with the language, and as of the Jan. 14 meeting, it had been sent out to the town attorney. The vast majority of the language had been borrowed from the commercial lease, according to Van Tol, with one sentence taken from Fort Collins. The changes, which largely...

Speed limits are also increasing on sections of US Highway 85 from Cheyenne to Newcastle and WYO 120 north of Cody to the Montana border. “WYDOT expects changing the speed limit signs on each of the three highways to take about one day to complete under favorable weather conditions, a...

This weekend, sheriff badges with black bands around them were showing up on Facebook in remembrance of Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Patrolman Derrek Craig. Craig died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Rawlins in the early morning hours of Jan. 13. Craig had worked for the sheriff’s office for 10 years. Prior to working at the sheriff’s office, we was the Chief of Police in Encampment. Colson said Craig was the type of person who always put service to the citizens of Carbon County first and never hesitated to what needed to be...

  • Sewer outfall project faces more questions

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 20, 2016

The Saratoga Outfall Sewer Project has seen changes since the update at the last Saratoga/Carbon County Impact Joint Powers (water and sewer) Board meeting, according to Heath Overfield, Chief Executive Officer of Engineering Associates (EA). “We’re on hold right now as far as the design goes,” Overfield said. There are serious concerns that the project will not meet the Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) internal April 1 deadline, but since it’s internal, the DEQ has control over it....

  • The battle of bitterness and gratitude

    Erik Gantt|Jan 20, 2016

It is no secret around the Saratoga Sun office and at home that I have been feeling grumpier than usual lately. I definitely fit into the curmudgeon category sometimes, and lately I have fallen in to the trap of resentment. As the saying goes, holding a resentment against someone is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will get sick. I have found it a fine line to walk, working for the newspaper and trying not to judge people. Another saying is that it is none of my business what peo...

  • Resident urges JPB and mayor to reconsider sewer outfall project

    Jan 20, 2016

Editor, What if you could solve the Saratoga sewer treatment plant problems and save the local taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Would you be interested? The unelected and unaccountable Joint Powers Board has decided to build a 12” pipeline that continuously dumps ammonia laden discharge water directly into the N. Platte River. Cost to you – 1 million dollars to be paid by you in your sewer and water bill every month for the next 20 years. They claimed there was no other solution, which is absolutely false. All across the country othe...

    Erik Gantt|Jan 20, 2016

At their Jan. 14 meeting, the Encampment Town Council passed ordinance 17.36.020(h) on its third public reading. The ordinance restricts future mobile home placement to established mobile home parks with the exception of existing mobile homes which shall be considered legal non-conforming structures. As the Riverside Town Council did earlier in the evening, the Encampment council signed a letter written by Carbon County Deputy Attorney Ashley Mayfield asking the town of Medicine Bow to accept...

The letter, written by Carbon County Deputy Attorney Ashley Mayfield, notes that all of the other SCWEMS entities have approved the amendment to the agreement without any additional terms. • SCWEMS revenue down for 2015

    Erik Gantt|Jan 20, 2016

In a review of 2015 financial reports the South Central Wyoming Emergency Medical Service (SCWEMS) Joint Powers Board concluded that revenue was down and at the moment costs are exceeding income. The current deficit was attributed to a lower call volume and a lag in invoice payments by member entities Saratoga, Encampment and Riverside. Clerks for the three towns said that they pay invoices from SCWEMS as they come in and have only received the December invoice for the second quarter of 2016...

  • Crews plant willows and cottonwoods along Encampment River

    Staff Report|Jan 20, 2016

Laramie Region Aquatic Habitat Biologist Christina Barrineau had help from the Laramie Habitat and Access crew and employees of Stantec to plant willows and cottonwoods on the Boykin Reach of the Encampment River habitat project. The cobble rocks used to stabilize the river bank make it difficult for vegetation to grow, so biologists plant woody species to help hold soil in place. Native grasses should eventually establish in the cobble with adequate amounts of soil. The crews planted the...

  • Five grapplers place at Don Runner invite

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 20, 2016

Jaxon King took first place in the 120-pound class at the Don Runner Wrestling Invitational last weekend, with four more Panthers placing as well. Saratoga wrestling head coach Jared Mason called the invite another good weekend, adding that it was beneficial for the team to wrestle opponents that they will face later on in the season at state competitions. Saratoga took fifth place overall. King secured the championship by winning a close match against a ranked wrestler from Greybull-in fact, Ma...

  • Tigers win first two conference contests

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The Tigers had a successful weekend against conference foes Cokeville Panthers and Farson/Eden Pronghorns. One impressive shot in the game against the Pronghorn game was made by Gage Bartlett who sank a half court shot for 3 points in the final second of the first quarter. "It's something the boys all do at the end of practice," Encampment head coach Clint Bromley said, "but this is the first time any one of the boys have made it." The Tigers proved they do not get too excited when they are...

  • Lady Tigers split first conference games

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1 conference, 8-2 overall) split their weekend with one heartbreaking loss against the Cokeville Lady Panthers (2-0, 7-5) and a win against the Farson-Eden Pronghorns (0-2, 5-7). The loss puts them second in conference, but they still have more than a month to work on their skills before regionals at the end of February. The ball was hitting the bucket, but just wasn't going in, which was obviously frustrating for the girls. Despite the 42-33 loss to Cokeville, the...

  • Panther boys show improvement

    Erik Gantt|Jan 20, 2016

After a conference loss to Burns (1-1, 7-7) on Friday, Panthers (0-2, 1-7) coach Jason Williams told the team, "You guys are probably going to be sick of hearing me say this, but you are so close to putting it together, full-blown, and surprising some people." In a game that both the coaches and boys went into thinking they could win, the Broncs bested the Panthers 47-55. In a reportedly quiet locker room after the Burns game, Williams said, "I told them, they need to use that hurt to make...

  • Heads held high after tough weekend

    Erik Gantt|Jan 20, 2016

The Saratoga Lady Panthers varsity basketball team (1-2, 3-4) showed a lot of heart last week, even with two conference losses. The girls hosted the Burns Lady Broncs (2-0, 7-7) on Friday and even with a stellar second half, the Lady Panthers came up short in a 30-38 loss. Saratoga was ahead by one point at the end of the first quarter but couldn't overcome a 10-point run by the Lady Broncs in the second quarter. Showing improvement in their defense and rebounding the Lady Panther out-scored...
