Seeking heaven while living through hell

POWELL — From a distance it may have seemed like a fairly easy hunt.

It’s a dream for any sportsman to be able to fill three large game tags in one season. One young hunter in Encampment, however, has done it twice.

Coy Munroe is a freshman at Encampment K-12 School and has been hunting on his own for the past three years. Growing up in Wyoming, hunting has been a way of life for the young Munroe who has grown up on the Munroe Ranch south of Encampment.

Gerald Crist’s hunting season just got a little busier.

The Greybull resident had three big game licenses secured, but in mid-June Crist added a fourth as he won the Wyoming Governor’s Wild Bison raffle. Starting this year, all licensed sage grouse hunters will be required to carry a free, annual sage grouse hunting permit. This new regulation aims to enhance the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s efforts to survey sage grouse hunters and gather valuable data on their hunting experiences.

Some trends — good and bad — figure to hold true once again in 2024. Mother Nature always plays a role in hunter success and animal survival, as does the time and effort put forth by hunters.

Months of planning have passed and it’s finally hunting season for some. But before you hit the trail this fall, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department wants to remind people who recreate in bear country to take safety precautions and be on the lookout for bears — and signs of bears.
