Retail stores in the Platte Valley have a lot to offer for Christmas shopping

These days in the chronically online world, it is easy to click on an app on your phone or go to big box stores, but did you know that the Platte Valley retail stores have a lot to offer?

In the Platte Valley, Main Street is still alive with shops all around Saratoga and Encampment.

We went shopping before Thanksgiving and found great ideas for Christmas gifts in our advertisers’ stores.

 

CCSD#2 Schools to honor veterans

Schools in the Carbon County School District No. 2 are holding Veteran Day assemblies.

Encampment K-12 is holding a Veterans Day assembly November 11, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. The National Honor Society will be collecting retired flags for the Veterans of Foreign Post 6125 disposal. Visitors need to sign in at the office before going to the main gym for the program.

Veterans Land in Saratoga

United States Air Force veterans Alex and Karen Smith can be found in full force at downtown’s Shively Hardware in Saratoga moving here in November 2023.

Karen is no stranger to Saratoga as she grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and Saratoga, Wyoming. Her mom, Mary Jellen, is the second of the Glode/Shively children making Karen a 4th generation to work in the family hardware store.

Wounded Warrior Event to return to Valley

It has been nearly a decade since the Platte Valley Trout Unlimited has sponsored wounded veterans to a fishing retreat in the Valley.

That is changing thanks to an effort of several volunteer groups in the Encampment.

Local VFW was formed in 1983

The Veterans of Foreign Service and the National Society of the Army of Philippines asfounded in 1899. They were organized to secure rights and benefits for veterans of the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Philippines War (1899-1902).

American Legion is 105 years old

The American Legion was formed in 1919 and is the largest veterans’ organization in the United States.

American Legion Post 54 is located at 403 E. Bridge Avenue in Saratoga and hosts an annual Veterans’ Day Dinner at their post. James Olguin is the commander and Joe Parsons is the adjutant of the post.

Welsh traveled the world in the Navy and Air Force

Phil Welsh’s military career spans from 1974 to 2010, serving in Vietnam to an assignment in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Welsh joined the Navy at the age of 18 after living in Durango, Colorado all of his life. He had always had an interest in the Navy and worked on a destroyer. During that time, he was deployed to Vietnam. He served for four years and then got out.
