$500 award for community spirit

The application period is now open for the $500 Youth Citizenship Award offered by the Valley Service Organization (VSO) to graduating Carbon County School District 2 seniors.
Application forms are available from the counselor’s office at each of the district’s high schools. Home-schooled students are also eligible for this award according to Carol Beach, YCA project chairman for VSO.

Contract talks

When the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees brought the contract for Linda Butler up for a motion, it was met with an awkward silence.

Cohorts bend graduation rates

On Jan. 22, the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) released graduation rates for the 2017/2018 school year. The State of Wyoming’s graduation rate rose from 80.2 percent in 2016/2017 to 81.7 percent for the most recent school year. Carbon County School District (CCSD) No. 2 is ahead of that curve, despite the fact that the school district did see a decrease in their graduation rates.

Ringing in memories

On Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Medicine Bow Elementary School (MBE) there was a ceremony presented by students and staff of the school honoring a bell that started ringing students to come to school 93 years ago.
"It was really good," Traci Schneider, principal of MBE, Hanna Elementary and Elk Mountain Elementary said of the ceremony.

No free lunch?

Carbon County School District (CCSD) No. 2, at last count, had 607 students enrolled in seven schools. Of those, approximately 247 students, or 41 percent, receive free or reduced lunches at school. The program, which is federally funded, is at risk of disappearing due to the partial government shutdown that recently surpassed the one month mark.

Collaring data

Last February, students from Encampment K-12 School aided the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) in collaring five sheep of the Encampment River herd with Global Position System (GPS) collars under the guidance of Jordan Seitz, Encampment 6th grade classroom teacher and 8th grade Earth Science teacher, along with Saratoga Wildlife Biologist Will Schultz and Habitat Biologist Katie Cheesbrough.

Adopt a vet

On Thursday, Nov., 8th, Encampment K-12 held an incredible Veterans Day Assembly. With many local Platte Valley Veterans making an appearance. In preparation of the assembly, Encampment National Honor Society students assigned a Veteran to each grade K-6. Each class introduced their veteran to the school and presented them with a gift.
