  • Speech and debate has win streak upset

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 24, 2016

The Saratoga Speech and Debate team's winning streak was interrupted in Rawlins this weekend when they took second place to Greybull. "We had a number of our strongest underclassmen home sick this last weekend, which really drives home to me that our success is not just contingent upon the performance of our upperclassmen," said head coach Jake Mickelsen. Still, the seniors did not let the team down with Jacob Dickinson taking first place in Drama, Mariah Scharosh taking sixth place in Poetry...

  • Data may pull plug on outfall project

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 17, 2016

With recent developments in mind, Saratoga Director of Public Works Jon Winter believes there may be a chance that the Saratoga wastewater sewer outfall may be maintained as is. Winter will meet with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) to continue a discussion on the sewer outfall project, which has been a controversial topic since its initial approval in Sept. 2013. This meeting and discussion could mean that the current wastewater outfall, which involves dumping in Hot...

  • Health issues plague wrestlers

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 17, 2016

"We're limping into regionals a little bit with illness, injuries and some wrestlers fighting grades," said Saratoga Boys Wrestling Head Coach Jared Mason. With many of the boys either recovering or currently out of commission, Mason described last weekend at the Carbon County Invite in Hanna as kind of a rough one, with only three wrestlers competing for the duration of the tournament. Daynon Mowry is out on concussion protocol, and Jaxon King struggled through one match Friday afternoon...

  • Spiering takes a belt at Ron Thon

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 10, 2016

Thatcher Spiering took first place at Ron Thon over the weekend, a feat which head coach Jared Mason described as "almost shocking." It is not too surprising because Spiering does everything a champion should as far as extra conditioning, wrestling camps, hard workouts and dedication to practice, Mason said. The huge, well-earned victory comes as a shock because of the position of the Panthers among the others at Ron Thon. Approximately 300 wrestlers show up to the event from 42 schools across...

The stand-out seniors distinguished themselves again, with Jacob Dickinson taking first place in drama and second in oratory and Mariah Scharosch taking second in poetry. • BOCES funding to stay the same

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 10, 2016

The Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) decided not to pursue additional funding this year. According to BOCES Coordinator Melissa Donough, at a special meeting on Feb. 2, the board discussed their current funding situation and found that for their activities, the amount is adequate. Because it is currently an election year and the economic situation in Wyoming is less than ideal, BOCES members decided that this may not be the best year to present this idea to voters. Donough said...

In the end, he learned that with a little effort, it wasn't as hard as everyone cracked it up to be. • Garden needs seed money

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

The Saratoga Community Garden Board knows what they need to do to take their gardening to the next level, but the age-old concern of how to pay for it prevents immediate action. Money isn’t the only concern—the pollinator mounds that should be up during the spring are paid for by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant. Grant funding allows the garden to hire three high school students for science enrichment and paid work. The garden still needs to collect volunteers to set up four tot...

  • A peer-reviewed study of Star Wars

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

he Star Wars franchise, I’ve heard, is one of the most pervasive cultural reference systems in modern America. I don’t believe you can fully understand that unless you grew up never having seen it, watching the films for the first time in your 20s. That’s what I did. When Luke, alongside Yoda, is trying to use The Force1 to raise a submerged spaceship2 from the swamp3 in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda famously says “Do or do not. There is no try.” I had no idea that was from Star Wars. Instead,...

  • Mental toughness key for varsity wrestlers

    Madeline Weiss|Feb 3, 2016

The Saratoga Panther wrestlers proved once more they can hold their own against any team. Head coach Jared Mason commended the boys on a successful weekend once more at the Bridgerland Duals in Lyman. Thatcher Spiering, Bradley Bifano and Jaxon King were all undefeated at the duals, a tournament where teams in their entirety go head to head against one another in each weight class. With a small team, the Panthers ended up with several forfeits because they do not have a wrestler for every...

  • Saratoga responds to complaints

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 27, 2016

Saratoga should see some “positive changes” with regards to enforcement in town, according to Saratoga Mayor Ed Glode. This came alongside an announcement of the new clean-up committee at the Jan. 19 Saratoga Town Council meeting. Glode described the concept of the new committee as a collaboration between senior police officers, the zoning officer, director of public works, chairman of the landfill board, council representative to the planning commission and the mayor. • Saratoga grapplers a force among elite competition

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 27, 2016

Thatcher Spiering grappled his way to first place in the 152 pound weight class last weekend, disrupting top Greybull wrestler Cole Hill’s undefeated season. Spiering won against the tough competition in double overtime, going into the match knowing that if it went into overtime, he would take the win. Head coach Jared Mason described the match as “really exciting,” especially considering it had been a goal of theirs to defeat Hill after losing to him the week before. Five Saratoga wrest...

arrowly, the Saratoga Speech and Debate team placed third at last weekend's invitational in Evanston. "We were lumped in with the 3A schools, and placed third overall by very slim margins. We were only nine points behind 3A winner Rock Springs, and four behind Star Valley," said assistant coach Kate Sherrod."We might not have the hardware this time, but we have the pride." Seniors Jacob Dickinson and Miriah Scharosch placed first and sixth, respectively, in Dramatic Interpretation, while Scarosc...

  • Finalizing the hangar lease agreement

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 20, 2016

Last Thursday, Andy Van Tol presented changes to the lease agreement in order to resolve issues of renewal and termination in ways that make sense, especially tax-wise, for hangar owners. The Saratoga Airport Board was satisfied with the language, and as of the Jan. 14 meeting, it had been sent out to the town attorney. The vast majority of the language had been borrowed from the commercial lease, according to Van Tol, with one sentence taken from Fort Collins. The changes, which largely...

  • Sewer outfall project faces more questions

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 20, 2016

The Saratoga Outfall Sewer Project has seen changes since the update at the last Saratoga/Carbon County Impact Joint Powers (water and sewer) Board meeting, according to Heath Overfield, Chief Executive Officer of Engineering Associates (EA). “We’re on hold right now as far as the design goes,” Overfield said. There are serious concerns that the project will not meet the Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) internal April 1 deadline, but since it’s internal, the DEQ has control over it....

  • Citizen voices flood control concerns

    Madeline Weiss|Jan 13, 2016

A Saratoga resident who lives close to the river, Bob Thrasher, brought concerns about flood control to the Saratoga Town Council at the Jan. 5 meeting, wondering what plans were in the works for 2016. Mayor Ed Glode clarified that the lack of activity was due to the long wait for a ground penetrating radar study, which was determined as an improper tool in November. “Since then, we’ve toured the river with Army Corps of Engineers, and we’re going to tour it tomorrow (Jan. 6) with FEMA,...

Kelly Ralston, of Encampment, used these cold caps before FDA approval for chemotherapy in 2014. While she still lost some hair, Ralston was able to keep half of her hair by using the cooling cap. The FDA mentions the Dignitana D...
