$400K for 4-H

Spur Outfitters Shooting Clays event raises funds for 4-H Foundation

The 12th annual 4-H Shooting Clays Fundraiser was held July 20 and 21 at the Spur Outfitters shooting range. The event, originally conceived by Spur Outfitters lead guide Dave Sturm, has raised around $400,000 for the 4-H Foundation over the run of the event.

Sturm has always stipulated that the money raised at the event goes toward the shooting sports division of the 4-H foundation.

Sturm said, "I started it when I built the sporting clays course," and since Sturm knew people who have long been involved in 4-H Shooting Sports like Roger Cox, Mike Moon and Louie Braun, the idea caught on.

Friday night a barbecue and calcutta is held. When describing the calcutta Sturm said, "That's how we raise funds. There are 36 four-man teams and we sell them that night."

The next day the shooting begins. Saturday there are three flights of shooting beginning at 8 a.m. with another at 10:30 a.m. and the last flight at 1:30 p.m. During the day, burgers and brats are served to hungry participants.

This year the youth winners were Tom Wagner who took 1st place and Slayd Daley who won 2nd.

Next year's 13th annual 4-H Shooting Clays event is already scheduled for July 19 and 20, 2019.
