Singles Eating Together

St. Barnabas begins Monday singles dinner/conversation program

A new ministry for single adults has blossomed at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church. Singles Eating Together is a monthly time for adult singles—of any faith—to gather and share a meal and conversation. The next Singles Eating Together gathering will take place on Monday, July 9th at 5:30 p.m. in St. Barnabas’ Church’s Agape House, located at the corner of First Street and Main Ave. in Saratoga. Single adults in the valley are welcome to join us for food and fellowship.

This ministry grew out of a study undertaken by members of the congregation during the winter months. The group followed a process outlined by Alan Roxburgh in his book, Joining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our Time. During the study, group members meditated on Scripture passages, prayed, visited with community members, and discerned needs in our community that our congregation could address. One need that came to the group’s attention was that widows, widowers, divorcees, and other single adults missed the social contacts they had enjoyed when they were part of a couple.

During the same time period, the Rev. Susan Dyer, priest of St. Barnabas’ Church, was facilitating a grief support group. The Rev. Dyer asked members of the grief group if they would like to gather periodically for meals and conversation. The response was enthusiastic. Members decided to meet monthly for dinner. When the days grow shorter, the group may opt to gather for monthly lunches.

The group met in June and enjoyed a meal prepared by Susan Dyer and Peggy Hotchkiss. Community members have volunteered to assist with preparing future meals. All single adults in our valley are welcome to join us. For additional information, please contact the Rev. Susan Dyer at 303-910-6699, the Rev.
