Track team takes third in Torrington

Miners claim eight golds at East Regionals on way to State competition

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School track placed third overall at the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) 1A/2A East Regional track meet in Torrington.

"The effort and accomplishments of our athletes at the 1A East Regional showed the rewards of work over the course of the 2018 track season," Jackie Jones, HEM head track coach said. "The number of of state qualifiers, athletes who set new personal bests, and the many regional championships won are a testament to a group of young people who chose to showcase their best at an optimum time."

Conor McGraw had an outstanding day with a 1st place in the boys 100 meter race with a time of 11.59; a gold win in the boys 200 meter coming in at 23.04; 1st in the boys 110 meter hurdles timed at 15.49 and 2nd in the boys 300 meter hurdles at 41.19.

His twin brother Shane had an excellent day too. He placed 1st in the boys 400 meter at 50.57 and gold in the boys Long Jump at 19 feet, 2 inches. In the boys 800 meter race S. McGraw came in third and in the boys 200 meter race he placed fourth to add points for the team.

Taylor Widdison came in fourth in both the boys 1600 meter and boys 3200 meter races.

Widdison was on the team that won gold in the boys 4x800 relay that came in with a time of 9:35.50. The other racers on the team were Kyle Solaas, Alex Claice and Josh Lee.

In the boys triple jump, Deveon Grosstick placed fifth to help with points for the Miners overall score.

"We are thrilled that the kids earned a third place finish in both the boys and girls diviisions," Jones said.

The girls had several 1st place wins.

Taylar Scott brought in the gold in the girls triple jump that reached 32 feet and 1 inch. She placed 2nd in the girls meter at 13.36; 2nd in the girls 200 meter at 27.63 and 2nd in the girls 400 meter 105.31.

Amy Campbell had 1st place finish in the girls long jump at 14 feet and 3.25 inches. She came in fourth in the girls 100 meter and sixth for the girls shot put to bring points the Miners overall score.

Her twin sister Madison did well at regionals too. She placed 2nd in the girls 800 meter race with a time of 2:37.01 and 2nd in the girls 1600 meter race at 6:16.74. In addition to those finishes, M. Campbell came in third in the girls 300 meter hurdle race and fourth in the girls 100 meter race for points for the Miners team.

Jones said the team as happy with their showing at regionals.

"The bus ride home was quiet with resting kids, but the pride could be felt by all," Jones concluded after the day way done.

The Miners are sending 13 athletes to State in Casper May 17-19.
