Liquor and junk

Hanna Town Council approves liquor licenses, gets junk haul away set up, changes recreation center hours and name of park

The Hanna Town Council met at 6 p.m on Tuesday at the town hall. Before the council meeting started, Tony Poulos, mayor of Hanna, had a public hearing asking the audience if there was anyone who had a problem or question about upcoming approval of liquor licenses.

When no one spoke up, the council went to business as usual. The agenda, minutes from March 13 and March 27 special meeting were approved. The bills to be paid were $46,849.38 There was a question about the lawyer’s bill concerning work done for the Hanna Recreation Center’s rule manual that needed clarification. Pam Paulson, the town treasurer said it would be investigated.

Poulos asked Leonard Gonzales, chairman of the High Country Joint Powers Board (HCJPB) about an emergency meeting called on April 16. L. Gonzales explained the meeting was called because the operator of the landfill had retired unexpectedly and the situation had to be remedied immediately. Poulos said he understood and asked to be apprised of future meetings.

A break in a water main in Old Town, across from the Hanna Elementary School, had Larry Korkow, public works director, and David Sutter, water treatment plant director, at the scene and not at the council. The break has since been repaired.

Ann Calvert, town clerk, said the town’s spring cleaning service was in operation. For residents, the town will help haul away junk every Wednesday. An appointment for pickup is necessary. To schedule, call the town hall at 325-6795 during regular office hours. The pickup does not include regular household trash.

Jeff Neimark went over two months of reports due to his absence last meeting. He reviewed the incident of a student potentially bringing a gun to school. He went over the protocol followed (see “Threat reported, investigated” in the March 28 edition on page 14 in the Saratoga Sun). He said an arrest had been made of a person who had controlled substances in early May.

Vivian Gonzales, Hanna Recreation Center director, told the council the pump had been ordered for the pool. She said once the pump was installed, the pool would be ready to open as all other repairs had been completed.

“Once the pump is in, it will still take a week or two to fill the pool, so we still have some time before the pool will be operational,” V. Gonzales said.

The council approved V. Gonzales request to change the hours of operation for the recreation center. After May 15, the center’s hours will be Tuesday-Friday morning hours 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and evening hours 4 to 8 p.m. Saturdays hours for the center are from noon to 8 p.m. The pool hours are the same as the center, except it closes a half an hour before the center.

After board and department reports, the town approved the liquor licenses for the Nugget Bar, Skinny’s Beer Garden and Dingy Dan’s.

Paulson, member of the museum board, told the council the 1918 Diamond Fire Truck will be moved from the fire department’s barn to the new building of the Hanna Museum after the move was approved.

A permit for fowls for Brenda Cox was approved.

The first reading for the budget and fiscal year of 2018-2019 was approved as was the HCJB 2018-2019 budget.

Penni Sager, Veterans Foreign of Wars (VFW) Ladies Auxiliary, told the town all of the VFW’s flags had been donated to the town and all signs marked VFW had been taken down. The VFW park is also being turned over to the town and Sager asked if the name of the park could be named after Lucas-Saari-McAtee. This was the name of the Hanna VFW post No.6680 before it became defunct. The council approved the name for the park.

The next scheduled Hanna Town Council meeting is at 6 p.m. on June 12 at the town hall.
