Carbon County gets 'wooly'

Local garment creators vie in county, state Make It With Wool competitions

The Make It With Wool (MIWW) District No. 9 Contest for Carbon County was held on Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Jeffrey Center in Rawlins. Contestants modeled outfits they had made of at least 60 percent wool fabric or yarn. Garments were also judged on construction. Lisa Johnson, District Director, and Lynda Johnson, State Director, announced the winners at the end of the fashion show held that afternoon.

Placings were as follows:

Pre-teen:

1st place: Madi Dunning, Encampment, green/blue/ivory plaid vest and green skirt.

2nd place: Siobhan Lally, Savery, orange/blue/rust plaid jacket.

3rd place: Aspen Evans, Baggs, green/black plaid skirt.

Other pre-teen contestants: Hannah Lee, Encampment; Maeve Lally, Savery; Katie Fiedor, Saratoga; Isabel and Elena Latorre, both of Rawlins.

Junior Division:

1st place: Ashlynn Johnson, Encampment, blue/black coat, black pinstripe vest and slacks, yellow blouse.

2nd place: Makiya Johnson, Encampment, blue/green plaid coat and blue dress.

3rd place: Peyton Munroe, Encampment, black coat, dress with teal bodice and black/ivory skirt, and black jacket.

Adult Division:

1st place: Estella Munroe, Encampment, brown/multi-color coat, brown skirt and jacket, salmon shell top.

2nd place: Sheryl Hunter, Saratoga, purple knitted dress.

3rd place: Amber Snyder, Rawlins, tan/green plaid dress.

Ashlynn Johnson, Makiya Johnson, and Estella Munroe, represented Carbon County at the State MIWW Competition held Nov 26-27 in Casper. Ashlynn Johnson received 2nd place in the Junior Division, as well as the “Creativity Award” and the “People’s Choice Award.” Makiya Johnson received 3rd place in the Junior Division. Estella Munroe received 1st place, as well as the “Outstanding Construction Award” in the Adult Division. Sheryl Hunter’s purple dress won 1st place in the Knitted/Crocheted Wearable Apparel Division.

Jim Johnson, of Encampment, had five of his granddaughters participate in the State MIWW Competition. Alicia Downare, of Buffalo, won 1st place in the Senior Division; Sydney Downare, also of Buffalo, won 1st place in the Junior Division. These two girls will represent Wyoming at the National Competition held February 1-3, 2018 in San Antonio.

Johnson’s other granddaughters included Ashlynn and Makiya Johnson, both of Encampment, as well as Cassie Downare, of Buffalo. All five girls wore “angel pins” in memory of their grandmother, Roxana Johnson, who served as the State Director of the MIWW contest for many years.
