HEM crushes St. Stephens

The Hanna–Elk Mountain–Medicine Bow, (HEM) Miners football team destroyed the St. Stephens Eagles 57 to 2.

"Week one game was a good learning experience. We needed to get out a play to see where we are. Overall we had a very good game," said Zach Scott, head football coach for HEM.

Shane McGraw led the Miners with completions out of six attempts for one touchdown, and passed for 99 yards. Tyler Goodro threw for 66 yards.

Shane McGraw was also the leading rusher with nine carries, gaining 193 yards. His brother, Conor, was the second leading rusher with 57 yards. Shane had six touchdowns and Conor had one.

Brendon Reeves had a receiving touchdown and a conversion to his credit. Reeves had six receptions for a total of 152 yards.

It was not only the offense that was on fire. Basil Phillips had nine solo tackles and two assists, giving him a total of 11 tackles. Conor McGraw had five solo tackles two assisted for a total of seven, and Devon Grosstick had four solo tackles and three assisted, also for a total of seven tackles.

Conor McGraw, Grosstick, Josh Lee and Jacob Jeorgesen all had one sack apiece.

Scott is happy with the outcome of the first game and the performances of his players, but he knows the next game against defending state champion Kaycee is going to be a serious challenge.

"This week's game is a huge test, two-time defending state champs. It will be a tough fast game," Scott said. "It will give us another look at our team ... are we ready to compete at the highest level and what we need to work on moving forward."

The resounding victory over the Eagles shows HEM is a team to watch this season.
