Free seed library opens

Complimentary seeds are now available at the Saratoga Library for the opening of the “Saratoga Free Seed Library,” according to announcement made by Saratoga Friends of the Library (FOL), sponsors who encourage local folks to plant gardens for their own physical and mental health, and the health of the ecosystem.

Seed packets are now available at the Saratoga Public Library during regular hours, and are stored in a cabinet with information available regarding planting instructions. You don’t need to have a library card, or be a Friends of the Library member, to take them, a FOL news release states.

Seeds are divided into small packets, enough to plant a hill of squash, a row of beans, a pot of herbs, etc. Volunteers have ordered seeds that are non-GMO. Many seeds are heirloom and organically raised when possible. There are many varieties of vegetables and herbs. Flower seeds include native or near-native plants, several of which were recommended by Jamie Weiss of the Rocky Mountain Audubon Society in her March “Habitat Heroes” program at the Saratoga Library.

This is the second year for the project. Some seeds have been donated, and others were purchased by Friends of the Library using proceeds from their book sales and other private donations.

Seeds will be available during the months of April at May at the Library located at 503 W. Elm Ave. in west Saratoga.
