Jury phone scam hits county

A telephone scam that has been going around the Cheyenne area has come to Carbon County as of Thursday.

The scam involves a caller who identifies himself as Deputy Sergeant Mathews who says he is calling to advise you that you have missed jury duty and, as such, a warrant has been issued for your arrest. The scammer then requests that you purchase gift cards in the amount of $1,500 for payment to avoid arrest.

According to the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office a similar scam has occurred in Carbon County in the past.

The Sheriff’s Office advises that at no time will you receive a call from the Courts, the Sheriff’s Office or any other county entity requesting you pay a fine for failing to report for jury duty.

The Sheriff’s office encourages any citizen who receives any type of call they believe is a scam to contact the Sheriff’s Office so it can be looked into before they send any money or act upon the caller’s request.

The Sheriff’s Office has developed a brochure outlining the various scams that citizens need to be aware of. If you would like a brochure, please contact Undersheriff Archie Roybal at 307-328-7714.
