It's Cow Pie time

Twenty-one years ago, Jimmy McKinney was golfing at the Saratoga Inn golf course for a school fundraiser when Jerry Paxton approached McKinney about having a golf tournament in his pasture.

The next year, 17 golfers participated in the “First ‘Anul’ Cow Pie Open Golf Classic”. The cow pasture has changed hands since then, but the agreement to host the Cow Pie Open continues.

This year’s 20th “Anul” event will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. in Encampment. Duffers should gather at the “Hole 19 Club House” – a big log house with a green roof.

The course is a 10-hole par-3 course with 2 groups of five golfers playing off each tee box, with a blind-draw 2-person team score format.

A pre-sign up fundraiser dinner on June 5 from 5:30-7 p.m at the Grand Encampment Opera House benefits the Encampment Chapter of Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The dinner is all-you-can eat spaghetti including salad, garlic toast and drinks for $7/plate.

The public is invited to the dinner and attendees are under no obligation to register for the golf tournament.

A $30 entry fee gets a player into the golf tournament, which includes a custom shirt, beverages on every tee box, barbecue afterwards at Grand View Park in Encampment and a chance to win money. For more information about either event, call Jim McKinney at 307-710-5927.

The FCCLA will be selling breakfast burritos the morning of the tournament.

The proceeds from this year’s golf tournament benefit the Encampment/Riverside Volunteer Fire Department.
