Oiler springs past school pole vault record

Saratoga High School Senior Andrew Oiler topped the pole vault record set by Anthony Samson in 2012. Samson had broken the previous 21- year record in 2012 during state competition with a 12 foot 6 inch vault.

Oiler's 12'8" pole vault took place on the home field during the Burt Willford Memorial Meet.

Oiler tried to break his own record with a 13' pole vault. Oiler made three attempts and managed to clear the bar, but as he came down on the other side his chin clipped the bar.

"I couldn't have done it without Kelby Lang's encouragement," Oiler said. Lang was the volunteer manning the pole vault event and talked Oiler through his 13' attempts.

The Saratoga High School boys walked away with the first place ranking scoring 147 points. Encampment came in second with 115 points, Rawlins third with 101 points and little Snake River was fourth place with 85 points.

While Oiler was the only person to shatter Panther records Saturday, he was in good company as his fellow track and field competitors earned several points to put Saratoga in the lead at the home meet.

Alex Zeigler took first place in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 58.24.

Benjamin Fairbanks was first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes 16.68 seconds.

Oiler took first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.59.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Matthew Lincoln, Benjamin Fairbanks, Alex Ziegler and Andrew Oiler placed first in 3:51.41.

In the 4x800-meter relay, Jeremy Detterer, Benjamin Fairbanks, Bradley Bifano and Aaron Kerbs took first with a finish of 9:34.12.

"The boys have had good performances from one week to the next," Saratoga Track and Field Head Coach Rex Hohnholt said.

That is what he wants to see throughout the season as the athletes prepare for the state competition – a constant improvement.

Hohnholt was complimentary of the volunteers, parents of track kids and the Saratoga Booster Club which came out to help with the track meet. "We had a lot of good help," Hohnholt said. "It was great see."

The volunteers had run all the day long events.

The Saratoga High School girls track team placed fifth at the Burt Willford Memorial Meet, but it wasn't for lack of high scoring points. The team has only nine girls, which makes it difficult to get enough points for a good placement, Hohnholt said.

He is looking forward to having the eighth grade girls on the track team next year as many of them had standout performances on Saturday.

In the varsity girls, Meredith Lincoln took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.22.

The girls 4x100 meter relay team took first place with Allison Falk, Shaelee Hamann, Meredith Lincoln and Veronica Lincoln with a time of 1:00.52.

The Panther track team travels to Thermopolis on Friday for the Bobcat Invite and Lander for the Shane Brock Invite on Saturday. These are the last regular meets before regionals in Sheridan May 15 and 16.
