Johnson qualifies for National Make it with Wool

Makiya Johnson, of Encampment, won the junior division at the state Make it with Wool contest Nov. 30.

Johnson will be traveling to Reno, Nev., this week to compete in the national Make it with Wool contest.

Makiya has been sewing for five or six years and first to learned to sew from her grandmother, Roxanna Johnson.

“It was awesome to win at state,” Makiya said.

Makia’s sister Ashlynn Johnson was the first runner up in the junior division.

Sheryl Hunter, of Saratoga, entered a knitted wool jacket, which won the knitted and crocheted apparel contest at state.

Trista Ostrom, of Encampment, placed second at state.

The Make it with Wool Contest is around 50 years old and is supported by the Wool Growers Auxiliary. The national organization has contests in every state with each state divided into districts, according to a press release.
