Spiering takes second at Midwest tourney

Saratoga High School sophomore Thatcher Spiering took home second place from the Midwest Classic Nationals Wrestling Tournament.

Spiering competed in the 16-and-under division during the tournament, which took place April 5-6 in Kearney, Neb. He lost his second round match 2-4 to Jordan Britton, the 2014 Wyoming State Champion at 138 pounds, but Spiering beat Britton in the consolation semifinals by pinning him in overtime.

Spiering won his third place match, which allowed him to challenge the second place winner, Dustin Papa, for true second. Spiering pinned Papa in the first period.

"Thatcher wrestled really well and showed a lot of guts coming all the way back through the consolation bracket to win the true second title," said Luke Spiering, Thatcher's father.
