Saratoga thinking CAP: Father and son work to get Civil Air Patrol charter for Saratoga

Residents are expressing interest in establishing a Civil Air Patrol charter in Carbon County.

Ken Lehr sparked that interest when he moved to Saratoga with his family about 10 months ago from Nebraska after landing a job at the Saratoga Police Department. He said he and his son Cameron are members of the Civil Air Patrol, and want to spread their interest in Saratoga in hopes of getting a charter.

Ken and Cameron’s interest was well-received by the town.

Saratoga Mayor John Zeiger, Assistant Chief of Police Tom Knickerbocker and Ken Lehr met with Lt. Col. Rick Fawcett, a squadron commander for the Civil Air Patrol, Friday.

Fawcett discussed the options with the interested parties at length about establishing a Civil Air Patrol in Saratoga, saying a cadet program would be a good starting point.

“My philosophy is any community in Wyoming can have a cadet program,” Fawcett said.

The cadet program is part of one of three missions the Civil Air Patrol conducts. The program involves mentoring youth.

Fawcett said the program involves meeting about two-and-a-half hours per week, and can help youth with their future.

“No matter what they choose in their life … all the stuff they learn in the Civil Air Patrol helps,” he said.

Now, Lehr needs to help build interest for the Civil Air Patrol in the community.

Fawcett said, to start, Saratoga needs at least seven members, three of which are adults, to become a flight.

Lehr said his son has reached out to his friends to find interest.

“I think there is a pretty good interest here for that kind of stuff,” Ken Lehr said.

Fawcett said, once a successful cadet program is established, the group can grow depending on higher interest.

Lehr said he and his son helped build their program in Nebraska and re-interest in spear-heading growth in Saratoga.
