No one was happier to hear about Encampment’s open police chief position than one-time resident Mason Zeiger.
“I always wanted to come back here ever since I started in law enforcement,” Zeiger, who started Aug. 21, said. “It’s been a goal of mine to get back to Encampment, and Lloyd was kind enough to call me when the opening came up.”
Former chief Frank Duzik held the post for three years, but resigned to work at the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
After Zeiger graduated from Encampment High School, he joined the Navy as an electrician for six years. In 2003, he was hired on by the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office. After two years working in the jail and five years on patrol, he was frustrated there were no opportunities for advancement as a deputy.
“I started looking at it (Encampment chief) because I thought it would be something different everyday,” Zeiger said. “I like meeting people and doing what I can to figure out their problems.”
As police chief, Zeiger expects the biggest change in his responsibilities, other than more paperwork, will be having someone relying on him.
It’s a challenge he looks forward to.
