Draft calls for speed limit changes in Saratoga

The Town of Saratoga is in the process of conducting a new traffic survey, and several changes to speed limits are present in the draft.

Town Engineer Chuck Bartlett explained that a traffic study has not been conducted since the late 1970s, and was due for the town.

“The last time we did a study there were no paved roads,” Bartlett said.

The draft calls for speed limit increases from 20 to 25 miles per hour (mph) on outer parts of cross streets from Highway 130, while most of the 20 mph limits in the lower part of town will remain the same.

“The state actually mandates 30 mph,” Bartlett explained.

“From the hot pool to South River Street the speed limit will remain at 15 mph.”

The process for the study is in the preliminary stage, with public comment available sometime next week, and a public hearing after the comment period.

“We actually are lucky, because the signs need to be replaced for reflectivity, so we are killing two birds with one stone,” Bartlett added.

Bartlett added that the draft calls for several yield signs around town to be replaced with stop signs.

The changes should take effect in two to three months, according to Bartlett.

Bartlett has briefed the Saratoga Police Department on the proposed changes of the speed limits.
