The Saratoga men’s varsity basketball team evened their record to two and two with a 50 to 37 win at home this past weekend. The North Park Wildcats met the Panther team Saturday in a game that Saratoga dominated from the tip. Carbon County native and longtime rancher, Garland Bartlett (Sr.) passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at Valley View Care and Rehab Center in Saratoga at the age of 93. Garland was born on Aug. 19, 1919, in Rawlins to Garland P. Bartlett and Pearl Ellen Frisby. He married Elsie B. Williams, of Encampment, on May 29, 1942, in Encampment. They subsequently had 5 children, 4 of whom are still living. In 1921, the Bartlett family moved from the Rawlins area to the Severson Ranch on Jack Creek where they lived for 15 years. The Saratoga Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce raised a gross of $8,785 at this year’s Festival of Trees. After expenses, the money will be divided to help Saratoga’s High School’s Close Up group and Encampment’s ProStart with traveling expenses. “Raising $8,000 or $9,000 is a good year,” chamber director Stacy Crimmins said. Carbon County native and long-time businesswoman Carole Jean Kirk, 79, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at the McKee Hospice Center in Loveland, Colo., following a year-long battle with cancer. The Saratoga Town Council did not have a quorum at its Tuesday meeting and had to call a special meeting on Thursday to pay the bills. Mayor John Zeiger and Councilmen Steve Wilcoxson and Mike McWain were not present for the Tuesday meeting. At the special meeting Thursday, Zeiger apologized for the lack of a quorum, saying it was a miscommunication. The Encampment Tigers men’s basketball team came off of last week with two wins and will roll into the upcoming scheduled games with a 5-0 record. WYO 130 over the Snowy Range between Saratoga and Laramie closed on Friday afternoon, breaking a quarter-century record for the latest date to swing the gates. The previous record was Dec. 5. The following day, WYO 70 over Battle Pass between Encampment and Baggs closed. The roads were closed due to high wind and snow over the weekend. The transition from sixth grade to seventh grade is tough. The level of difficulty and amount of work means students must spend more time and be more organized. The Encampment Ladies basketball team couldn’t bag a win on the road last Tuesday and Friday night against the Rock River Longhorns and the North Park Wildcats. Robert (Bob) Everett Hobart, born Feb. 23, 1924 died Nov. 27, 2012. Hobart was the husband of Judith Ellen Masnari. A graduate of Colorado School of Mines, Geology, Hobart was also a retired Lt. Col., USMC Reserve. He worked as a geologist for Chevron Oil Company in Denver, Colo., and retired in 1985. With senior wrestlers at home taking ACTs, it was up to younger Saratoga grapplers to make a statement Dec. 8 at the Soroco Invitational, in Oak Creek, Colo. The Lady Panthers caught fire in the fourth quarter and almost put away a game they trailed all afternoon Saturday. As the production date for the Saratoga sawmill draws closer, there are still a few more positions to be filled. An idea that was tossed around at a Saratoga Recreation Commission earlier this year saw success Nov. 29. “Ladies Night Out” attracted 55 paying customers, Lisa Burton, Saratoga recreation director, said.
