    Sarah Hutchins|Apr 8, 2015

Katie Cheesbrough, terrestrial habitat biologist for the Wyoming Game & Fish Department, feels that it is time for an updated travel management plan and is glad to see the West Side Snowy Range Travel Management Project moving forward. “It is time to kind of look at it and see what they can do — and they can only do so much,” said Cheesbrough. Limiting access to roads will have positive benefits to the forest and the people who use them according to Cheesbrough; with a decrease in vehicle acces... Full story

  • Outcry leads to public meetings on Travel Management NPA

    Sarah Hutchins|Apr 8, 2015

Lack of Notice There will be three public meetings for the West Side Snowy Range Travel Management Project's Notice of Proposed Action (NPA); it's a good start to improve transparency, but many feel that it's not enough. There has been outcry from the public that changed the mind of Melanie Fullman, District Ranger for the Brush Creek/Hayden Ranger District and responsible official, to provide a public meeting to discuss the NPA. This is done to educate and inform the public as well as provide... Full story

  • Forest Service goes on placation

    H.B. Lawson|Apr 8, 2015

Last week you may have read the Saratoga Sun piece on the proposed road decommissions. In the article, District Ranger Melanie Fullman was quoted as saying, “I just don’t find those big meetings, which tend to get out of control to be very useful, ... I’m trying to make the most of my time.” Perhaps you heard the subsequent interview the local radio station did with Fullman the following day. If you did, then you would have heard the apparent disdain Fullman has for public meetings. In the rad...

  • Is it really a good idea to convert Forest Service roads to ORV-only trails?

    Apr 8, 2015

Editor: You may have read that the Forest Service plans to close 97 miles of roads this year. The actual numbers are much more dramatic. If you live in the valley because you enjoy hunting, fishing or camping, you should be concerned. The Forest Service has quietly announced that they intend to close nearly one third of the roads in the Snowy Range. Out of a total of about 600 miles of roads in the Snowy Range the USFS plans to change the following: Add to System as closed Road : 42 miles. Convert to closed Road : 82 miles. Decommission : 97 mi...

Editor’s Note: This letter was addressed to Dennis Jaeger, Forest Supervisor, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest in Laramie. Your local ranger has stated there will be no open public meetings and it is her intent to issue a decision by June 1st with implementation this summer. There has been no effort to contact those citizens in Laramie and Cheyenne who are also affected. Y...

    Liz Wood|Apr 8, 2015

A familiar face was on the mats during the USA Wrestling Tournament in Rawlins March 14. Thomas Ingraham has been wrestling since he was in the third grade and finished fifth at state for his high school wrestling team. But that Saturday, Thomas wasn't wrestling; he was refereeing. His youthfulness was obvious on the mats, since most of the referees that day were in their 30s or 40s. At 16 years old, Thomas is the only youth referee from Saratoga. It's his way of giving back to the sport. "I... Full story

  • Roads, roads and more roads

    Apr 8, 2015

1 years ago: April 8, 1915 Why is a liar. This paper last week took exception to a county paper trying to take credit for condemning excessive expenditures by the County Commissioners of this county on roads and bridges. What we had reference to in particular, was the expenditure from 1908 to 1912, and which matter this paper called attention to, and for which we were abused by the Rawlins Journal, and one or two others. Now comes poor old “bad stomach Bill” of the Journal, taking all the credit, for being the paper to whom we had ref...
