The Upper Platte River Solid Waste Disposal District’s (Landfill board) first meeting of 2017 was relatively well attended by the public. Board members discussed the opening of the Valley’s new transfer station. A tribute to the late Dale Federer, founder of the Saratoga High School wrestling program, will be heldthis weekend during the 2017 Carbon County Invitational held at the Panther Den in Saratoga. Coach Federer passed away on Aug. 30, 2016 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Valley lost another long time resident recently. Robert N. "Bob" Blom was born December 21, 1923 to the late Charles and Lena (Yuthas) Blom. He was the last surviving sibling of 8 children. Bob passed away December 27, 2016 in Gering, NE where he had lived for the past few years. In 1943 Bob joined the US Army and fought in World War II. Governor Matt Mead’s office announced an initiative Monday that is hoped will diversify the state’s economy and strengthen it. The Encampment Boys' Basketball team had a rough weekend facing off against two conference rivals, one of which was ranked #5 in the class. The boys hosted the Farson-Eden Pronghorns Friday and the Cokeville Panthers Saturday. Against the Pronghorns, the Tigers lost 73-57. Over the weekend, the Saratoga girls basketball team was on the wrong end of a pair of 4-point games. "It was a tough weekend. I mean, we were right there both games and had our chance to win," coach Heather Bartlett recalled of the home squeakers against Cokeville Friday and Farson-Eden Saturday. Visitors to public schools in the Valley will be required to show a legal ID to enter schools starting Feb. 13, as the Carbon County School District #2 (CCSD #2) implements a new computerized visitor tracking system. The system, purchased from Raptor Technologies of Houston, will allow school personnel to scan a driver’s license, state ID or passport and issue a badge to visit the school property. Enrichment programs at the Saratoga Branch Library were developed Jan. 23 during the quarterly meeting of Friends of the Saratoga Library (FOL). At this session, members established February and March's program calendar and set the date for the Spring book sale.
