Unveiling the Master Plan

Discover Carbon County Wyoming releases Tourism Master Plan for Carbon County with focus on sustainable growth

In January, Discover Carbon County Wyoming—formerly Carbon County Visitors Council—unveiled their Tourism Master Plan.

According to a press release from Leslie Jefferson, CEO of Discover Carbon County Wyoming, the tourism master plan is “ambitious” and will chart “a course for a vibrant and sustainable future for this captivating piece of the West.” The press release went on to call the master plan a data-driven roadmap which outlines a strategic approach to attract new visitors, extend stays and generate economic growth.

The master plan, read the press release, would also preserve the natural beauty and cultural heritage which define Carbon County.

“We are excited to share our comprehensive master plan,” said Jefferson. “This plan will not only boost the local economy but also enrich the lives of our residents and the experience of our visitors. Discover Carbon County is committed to responsible growth that benefits both our residents and visitors.”

Under the new tourism master plan, there are four strategic approaches which are listed as:

  • The Visitor Experience – focusing on beautification, wayfinding signage, support of new attractions, amenities, businesses, downtown development efforts, wind energy education, and investigation of in-county transportation opportunities.
  • Outdoor Recreation – focusing on work with the Southeast Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Collaborative (SWORC), promotion of responsible outdoor recreation, development & promotion of outdoor recreation businesses, enhancement of amenities at existing outdoor recreation attractions, and promotion and enhancement of our extensive byways, backways, trail networks, and the Continental Divide Trail.
  • Hospitality & Economic Development – supporting efforts to improve the local hospitality workforce; to explore the effects of short-term rental properties; support of local, county and/or state policies, ordinances, and/or regulation to remove barriers hindering the county’s economic development on issues like housing, workforce, wi-fi, etc .; and support development of new lodging and camping facilities.
  • Partnership & Advocacy – utilize the Tourism Master Plan as a road map to cultivate a thriving sustainable tourism landscape, promote the positive impact of travel, increase in-county advertising to educate residents of attractions, amenities, and businesses in Carbon County.
