Hanna razes the roof

HEM improves ventilation system in wood, metal shops, throughout the school. Companies race the clock in getting building open for school year.

Harold Phillips, Director of Maintenance for north county Carbon County School District No. 2 schools said the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Middle/High School needed upgrades to improve safety for the students.

A new ventilation system in the metal shop was one of the new improvements done over the summer. There was also new lighting.

"The new ventilation system in the metal shop and wood shop was done to improve the safety for the kids," Phillips said.

The wood and metal shop areas were not the only areas of HEM to be improved concerning the ventilation system. The entire school got an upgrade. Ceilings were replaced throughout the school too.

"All the classrooms are being remodeled for lighting and ceilings," Phillips. "The ceiling are all brand new along with the light switches to go with the lighting."

The work was started two weeks before graduation, but demolition didn't start until all the students were gone.

"They basically gutted the school," Tony Leggett, a construction worker said.

Skylights were installed in the library and the lights in this room can be dimmed. The science lab had a window installed to give better lighting along with natural lighting.

"The science room was quite the undertaking because we had to cut through concrete walls," Phillips said. "It makes a huge difference to the atmosphere of the room."

The gym became a storage room for all the furniture and equipment. Putting it all in the gym took time and slowly it is getting put back into its proper place.

The kitchen was also had its heating system revamped.

Phillips said there were several construction companies working together to get all the work done before HEM reopens.

"It has been a big job," Phillips said.
