Hiker unharmed

Search operation called off when hiker turns up

During the weekend of June 16, several search and rescue teams in the area were called out to locate a missing hiker according to a press release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 11:45 p.m., authorities were notified that Saratoga resident Emma Dierks had not returned from a hike earlier that day. Dierks, an experienced hiker, was presumed lost by friend Joseph Saverine.

Carbon County Sheriff Deputy Hale made contact with Saverine, according to the press release, and it was decided a search would be made for Dierks in the morning. The following morning, June 17, Carbon County Sheriff Deputy Kevin Shue arrived at the Lake Marie parking area where he located Dierks’ vehicle. Upon locating the vehicle, Shue activated search and rescue members from Ryan Park, Saratoga and Encampment.

The press release went on to state that the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 9:20 a.m. that Dierks had walked out of the area on her own and was no worse for the wear. The search and rescue teams were called off as Dierks was accounted for.

Dierks informed Shue that she had traveled to Lake Marie for a hike on June 16, but due to the rain and fog from the inclement weather she could not find her way out and sought shelter for the night.
