70s feel for breakfast

Biscuit Barn breakfast buffet hits Hanna

Residents in Hanna now have a place to go to for breakfast on Sunday mornings. The Biscuit Barn, housed in the building that shares Skinny's Bar, opened two months ago.

Katrina Tolbert and Lennie Powell are the proprietors of the new breakfast eatery.

For the time being, a buffet is offered for morning munching fare.

Tolbert said the next step is to start having made-to-order specials such as possibly a breakfast burrito.

She said Powell created the interesting restaurant signage inside and outside from wood from an old barn.

There is a jukebox that plays CD's from eras gone by. The look of the place inside is done in the motif of 70s diner with a counter and tables to handle the Sunday morning crowd.

"We were actually going for a barn dance feel. So that is why we have the LPs and 45s on the walls," Tolbert said. "But we also wanted to work with what we have that was here."

Tolbert said there is usually a rush in the early morning and then another when churches let out.

She said customers have asked to have the place open on Saturday, but Tolbert wants to start off slow and build up a strong base.

"I love their breakfast potatoes," Shannon Hunter said as she sat down at the counter to enjoy her meal. Her plate was filled with scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, pan cakes and a small waffle.

Hanna resident Hunter has been a supporter of the Biscuit Barn since it first opened its doors.

Tolbert said the opening of the Biscuit Barn is a family affair where her children help. Her son, Josh, is back in the kitchen preparing most of the food for the buffet.

The younger Tolbert said he looks forward to when the kitchen will be doing specials. He wants people to have a choice of either the buffet or food to order.

Tolbert said the Biscuit Barn is a work in progress. She is learning what people want to eat in the morning and is trying to accommodate as best as possible.

"We are learning," Tolbert said. "That is why is we want to start slow and get it right."

The hours at the Biscuit Barn on Sunday are from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
