Winter storm expected Thanksgiving Day

Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator John Zeiger sent an email to the Saratoga Sun from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cheyenne stating confidence is increasing the southeast region of Wyoming will see snow accumulations as early as Wednesday evening continuing through Thanksgiving Day.

A strong pacific storm is expected to affect the Great Basin on Wednesday before lifting into Wyoming on Thursday, the notice from the NWS said.

Snow is expected to develop from Rawlins to Douglas Wednesday evening and spread to the rest of southeast Wyoming after midnight and continue on Thursday.

The greatest impacts are expected Thursday morning, with snow and impacts coming to an end around sunset Thursday.

Snow accumulations look to be the highest across the southeast Wyoming mountains and adjacent plains, according to the NWS.

As the storm heads toward the western Nebraska Panhandle, snow amounts will decrease.

Northeast winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 35 mph will produce considerable blowing and drifting of the powdery snow, the NWS said.

“It is important to note that some uncertainty remains with the storm track, which may affect timing and eventual snow amounts,” the NWS added, although confidence is high on a widespread accumulation.
