X-Country picks up the pace

The Saratoga Panthers cross-country team showed some improvements at the Rawlins Invitational.

Head coach Rex Hohnholt reported that about 75 percent of athletes had faster times than last week.

According to Hohnholt, Jeremy Detterer (10th place, 19 minutes and 15 seconds) showed a significant improvement. He was able to close the gap that Hohnholt saw in the high school varsity boys. "Not only did he improve a lot place-wise, but he improved a lot time-wise, so that was really encouraging," Hohnholt said. Next week the high school runners will be attending the upcoming Liberty Bell meet in Denver.

"We're moving in the right direction," Hohnholt continued, noting that the team will be working on mental preparation. "We're looking forward to Liberty Bell like we always are."

Hohnholt said that practices will include continuing to work on distance running, but he plans at least one day of quicker paced exercises for the week.

"I think our goal, at least on the boys' side, is to get at least six guys under 20 minutes, and if we can do that then we've done our job," Hohnholt said. "On the girls, it would be nice to see Ashlynn (Johnson) dipping under that 22 barrier and Katie (Loose) moving under that 23 barrier." Hohnholt added that Cruz Escobedo should be getting down to 25 minutes for the first time.
