CCSD#2 in the black

The Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Board of Trustees is financially in a place that they can consider re-adopting the Policy KAB-Special Recognition and Financial Assistance.

This policy provides financial awards to high performing students that place first at a state competition qualify for this financial assistance and may fill out the KAB application.

The most financial assistance delivered in one year by this policy is $34,000 due to a large number of teams that qualified. The rules have been amended to the current state since CCSD#2 has many students attend state and nationally ranked competitions, and thus must only award the very highest performing students.

Certain positions regarding these special programs and competitions have not had specific job descriptions, and as such the School Board approved descriptions for several positions, including Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) advisor, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advisor, Future Farmers of America (FFA) Vocational Agriculture advisor and Coach.

The School Board held a budget hearing at which they announced the budget for the 2015-16 fiscal school year. The general fund for this fiscal year is $18,400,000.00, an increase of $620,000 from the Amended Budget of fiscal year 2014-15.

The budget has increased due to the large amount of money in reserve, which according to the School Board’s bylaws must be reasonably spent. Financially, CCSD#2 is healthy and this year, they anticipate working on major maintenance projects. The focus is on the students, with an increase of $272,312.46 for the student activities budget from last year.

In a discussion regarding staff positions, CCSD#2 talked about a number of highly qualified teachers, or teachers that have a specific degree in the field which they teach. Saratoga schools have a highly qualified physical science teacher and Encampment has a highly qualified math teacher. These teachers are working towards getting their education credits.

In order for the staff to properly manage students, CCSD#2 is updating servers right now at Saratoga Middle/High School to support a new software system called Schoology, a learning management system that makes online education a collaborative effort for those involved in the student’s learning process. This allows teachers to easily and efficiently track progress, learning objectives and grades.

The next School Board meeting is Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office.
