Our rules on running

The political season is about to come into full swing. On May 15, people who want to run for office will register.

That means these people will also be getting the word out about their platforms, goals and public appearances.

Therefore, this is the perfect time to let the candidates, voters and supporters know the Saratoga Sun policies for election articles and advertising.

• The Saratoga Sun does not endorse candidates.

• All political ads must be prepaid.

• Ads must include a disclaimer stating who paid for the ad, i.e. “Paid for by the Committee to Elect John Smith”.

• The Saratoga Sun makes every effort to interview candidates running for office; whether it is for a city, county, state or federal office.

• We do not run press releases announcing a candidate is running for office.

• We do not run press releases announcing a candidate is coming to town for a meet and greet. This is advertising, and therefore the candidates responsibility to spread the word.

• When a state or federal candidate comes to town, we will make every effort to interview the candidate.

• We do not run letters to the editor endorsing or attacking a candidate.

• Letters from political candidates concerning issues in a campaign will not be published once the candidate has filed to run for office.

During the filing period, we will be checking with the Secretary of State’s office, the Carbon County Clerk’s office and the town offices to see who has filed for office, so that we may contact those candidates for interviews.

We do encourage candidates to visit with us, so that we can get to know you and present your ideas to the public.

We also encourage you to advertise in the Saratoga Sun to let the public know you are running for an office. We can either mail out a rate sheet, or anyone can stop by the office and pick one up.

It is our goal to inform our readers who is running and what they stand for. We will make every effort to treat all candidates who are running in as fair and unbiased a fashion as possible so that our readers may make an informed decision.

The staff at the Saratoga Sun wishes all the candidates the best of luck.
