Riverside council looking toward park upgrades

With warmer weather coming soon, council members were planning for park maintenance and summer events at last Thursday’s Riverside Town Council meeting.

Riverside Town Clerk Jan Cook said she submitted a $5,500 recreation board grant request, which would go toward park maintenance and Riverside Party Day expenses. The Riverside Party Day is held annually in August at Rick Martin Memorial Park.

“A total of $3,500 of it is for the park maintenance person’s salary, and $2,000 of it is for the concert for Riverside Party Day,” Cook said. “The Riverside Party day is for Aug. 23, and Davis and Maverick were available and they’re coming.”

The council discussed possible lodging for the Davis and Maverick musical group at Cottonwood Cabins. Cook asked council member Karran Bedwell, who owns Cottonwood Cabins, to check and see if she would have a cabin available during that time.

“They specifically asked because they liked your cabins so well,” Cook told Bedwell.

The council approved to put a project on the Fifth Penny Tax for park improvements toward Rick Martin Memorial Park. Bedwell said the park could use newer, more modern playground equipment.

“We really need to upgrade our playground equipment,” she said. “Even though we don’t have a lot of kids, a lot of people use that park in the summer.”

Council member Margaret Webber added that people have asked her about possibly adding Frisbee golf to the park.

“I’ve had more than one person approach me in regards to the park, wondering if the town could get money to buy the equipment for frisbee golf,” she said.

Near the meeting’s end, the council approved that the town buy its own 500-gallon propane tank for $675.
