Panthers take down four at Yoder

The Saratoga wrestling team beat four out of five teams at the Southeast Team Duals in Yoder Saturday.

The Panthers faced off against teams from Lusk, Hay Springs, Neb., Bayard, Neb., Burns and Southeast. Individually, Daynon Mowry, Thomas Ingleby and Tate Stinson all ended the tournament with five wins and no losses in their respective weight classes.

Sixteen teams were divided into four pools to begin wrestling, and Saratoga was in Pool C with Lusk, Hay Springs and Bayard. The Panthers lost to Lusk in the first round 30-39; beat Hay Springs 24-18; and scored a 36-36 tie over Bayard based on most head-to-head wins.

“This left a three-way tie for first in pool wrestling as Bayard beat Lusk,” said head coach Jared Mason. “Ultimately Bayard won the pool based on the most overall points scored, and the Panthers finished in third.”

The Panthers wrestled Burns next and won by a 48-36 score, winning every head-to-head match actually wrestled. Scoring 48 points meant that all eight of the Panthers wrestling won by pins, and the 36 points the Panthers gave up were all forfeits.

In their last dual of the day, the Panthers faced the host team, the Southeast Cyclones, and won all but one match. Their final score was 42-36.

“Overall, as a team the Panthers went 4-1 in the dual team tournament,” Mason said. “No individual medals were earned since we didn’t finish in the top three as a team, but more valuable mat time was gained as the Panthers had more wrestling success.”

Individual records for the Panthers:

120 lbs.- Thomas Ingleby, 5-0

126 lbs.- Hunter Mason, 4-1

145 lbs.- Thatcher Spiering, 4-1

152 lbs.- Tate Stinson, 5-0 (wrestler of the week)
