Grapplers earn four medals at Douglas Invite

It was an exciting weekend of wrestling for the Saratoga Panthers, as four of them made top-five placements at the 2014 Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament in Douglas.

Panthers Thomas Ingleby and Trey Ingleby competed in the junior varsity division, and both secured first place at the two-day tourney, which took place Friday and Saturday. Coach Jared Mason said he was proud of both Inglebys and the varsity wrestlers for their efforts on the mat.

"Thomas and Trey, both of whom finished in first place, are to be recognized as this week's co-wrestlers of the week. In the Varsity division, Saratoga had only entered one wrestler in the past, and that was Lionzo Escobedo who last year finished 0-2. The results this year were much better, as seven Panther matmen braved the competition with Hunter Mason and Thatcher Spiering earning the first varsity medals for Saratoga at the tournament."

For the varsity wrestlers, Hunter Mason wrestled to a 4-2 record over the weekend and earned fourth place in the 126 weight division. In his first wrestling match of the year, Thatcher wrestled to a 3-2 record and earned a fifth place medal in the 138 weight division.

Daynon Mowry, Bradley Bifano, Chaze Wiant, Kyle Bartlett and Tate Stinson also competed in the varsity division for the Panthers, but did not walk away with medals.

"Although they didn't medal they realized they can compete as they recorded a few wins and lost a few close matches against the stiff competition. The best part is that I know they are not satisfied and are inspired to work even harder so in the future Saratoga can place more wrestlers in varsity tournaments of that caliber, and earn individual medals at the state tournament which is the ultimate goal for the season."

The list of results from the tournament, which includes wrestlers from 3A and 4A high schools in Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado, is shown below.
