Competing and collaborating at Camporee

Webelos take egg boiling competition

Milo Hunter, a member of the local Scout troop, helped the Webelos participate in the winter Camporee and Klondike race March 2 at the Rendezvous area on the outskirts of Encampment.

The local Troop 153 is comprised of Saratoga Boy Scouts and Webelos from around the Valley.

Although the local boys who participated were younger than the rest of the troops, the boys of 153 won one of the three competitions and participated in the Klondike race itself.

There were three competitions on Saturday including a first-aid winter survival scenario, a snow blind obstacle course and the egg boiling competition that troop 153 won.

The Webelos, with the help of Milo, built and started a fire with flint and steel. They had an egg hard-boiled from the start of the fire to the finished egg in 20 minutes and 53 seconds.

“Fastest time of the day,” Webelo, Reid Schroeder said with a smile.

The Webelos who participated were Kelton Koehn, Ried Schroeder, Kalub German, Gavin Bartlett, Kyle Nuhn and Jonas Calvert.

“It’s pretty fun to help these guys get to the position I’m at,” Milo said. “These guys will be the replacements for our troop.”

After the competitions and lunch, the four Scout Troops in attendance, along with the Pack of Webelos, all competed in the Klondike race.

The race consisted of each team in a survival scenario. Each team had a sled and one injured person. A pack of necessities accompanied the injured man on the sled and the Troop had to work through a course and a broken sled situation.

Milo’s father, Stoney Hunter was in attendance as a volunteer and helps out with scouting when he can.

According to Stoney the interest in Scouting around the Valley is declining. The Boy Scouts need volunteers and leaders and it would be nice to recruit more members for 153, Stoney said.

“The resources are coming to an end and I would hate to see it die,” Stoney said.

Boys in the sixth grade to the age of 18 are encouraged to participate in Scouts, said Milo’s mother, Sheryl Hunter.

Parents, guardians and mentors are also encouraged to take part as a good way to get involved in their boy’s life.

Troop 153 meetings are Monday nights at the Platte Valley Christian Church. The meetings start at 7 p.m. and usually last until 9.
