Grapplers win two of five rounds

The Saratoga Wrestlers competed in three pool rounds but lost these three duals at the Southeast Duals in Veteran Saturday. The squad then won two duals in the bracketed round. The first three duals, in the pool rounds, determined which teams would move on in the tournament. The bracketed rounds paired up teams with those teams that finished the same earlier in the day.

In pool wrestling, the Panthers lost all three duals to Gordon/Rushville, Bayard and Lingle. However, in matches actually wrestled, the Panthers fared much better as there were only eight wrestlers in the 14 weight divisions.

Competing for the Panthers were Bradley Bifano at 106 lbs., Chaze Wiant at 113 lbs., Thatcher Spiering at 120 lbs., Hunter Mason at 126 lbs., Tate Stinson at 138 lbs., Levi Weatherd at 182 lbs., Jacob Wells at 220 lbs. and Hazer Hinkle at 285 lbs.

Round 1: Gordon/Rushville 45, Saratoga 34

Bradley Bifano, Hunter Mason and Jacob Wells all earned pins for the Panthers. Levi Weatherd and Hazer Hinkle each received forfeit wins and Thatcher Spiering won a 16-3 major decision. Chaze Wiant and Tate Stinson suffered the only losses for the Panthers.

Round 2: Bayard 42, Saratoga 33

“Our freshmen still look good,” coach Jared Mason said. “Lianzo Escobedo and Marshal Hill were both out last weekend and we would have had a better chance with them wrestling.”

Hunter Mason earned the wrestler of the week in the Panther locker room for his effort last weekend. Mason defeated a kid from Lingle that is ranked in the state standings.

Up next for the grapplers is the Carbon County Invite at the Panther Den this weekend. The action kicks off on Friday at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
