  • First in State

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

The Saratoga cross-country team was welcomed back to Saratoga with a police escort through town after taking first at state finals in Sheridan Saturday. The Valley harriers had an impressive array of team and individual wins, with the boys' varsity taking first place and the girls' varsity coming in seventh. The team, which has members from Saratoga High School (SHS) and Encampment High School (EHS), dominated the meet and won by margins nearly unheard of in the sport, according to the team's co... Full story

  • Clearing the bar

    Max Miller|Oct 26, 2016

A gravel bar in the Platte River going through town has been put on notice. At an Oct. 18 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, director of public works Jon Winter announced details of a long-awaited gravel-clearing operation that’s been slated for the first part of December. About 10 members of the public were in attendance to hear the news. “The goal is to get rid of the big bar (immediately south of the HWY 130 bridge). That’s the primary goal,” Winter said in an Oct. 24 interview with the Su... Full story

  • Credentials and concerns

    Max Miller|Oct 26, 2016

The night of Oct. 18 all four Carbon County Commissioner candidates found themselves on the hot seat, with a pair of Rawlins High School students doing the grilling. The occasion was a forum hosted by the Carbon County Higher Education Center (CCHEC), where about 30 people gathered to watch the three Republican incumbents and their lone Democratic challenger vie for three open positions on the board. The forum was also live-streamed on the CCHEC’s facebook feed, where it had generated over 1... Full story

  • Election system sound

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

In response to allegations made during the presidential race by Republican Candidate Donald Trump, the Wyoming Secretary of State and County Clerks are reassuring voters that Wyoming’s voting system is secure. Trump has repeatedly warned followers in the past several weeks that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, would steal the election by fraudulent measures thanks to a far-reaching conspiracy. During the most recent debate between the candidates, Trump said he could not commit to accepting the outcome of the election, causing some to raise q... Full story

  • End of the line

    Max Miller|Oct 26, 2016

The sun descended in tandem with my hopes of seeing a new part of Burkina, and it was 7:10 when the train finally chugged its way into the station. Workers herded us into a roped-off section of platform, and, like clockwork, pandemonium erupted. For whatever reason (and I spent long hours during my Peace Corps years trying to figure it out) “queuing,” or the social convention of forming lines, is not common in Burkina. Grown men and women, wearing clothes far nicer than mine, threw the... Full story

  • Saratoga Sun Editorial

    Saratoga Sun Editorial Staff|Oct 26, 2016

Recently the Saratoga Airport Board held a “regular” meeting at a non-publicly announced time. The board’s regularly scheduled meeting is supposed to be held 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at Saratoga town hall. The last meeting was held four hours later than was normal with no advance notice given to this newspaper. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is that any actions taken at an unannounced meeting may be, by Wyoming law, null and void. At its last meeting, the board unanimously voted to approve a transfer of the Fixed B... Full story

  • Lady Panthers run afoul of Rattlers, Tigers to end season

    Max Miller|Oct 26, 2016

Like Heartbreak Hill in the Boston Marathon, the Saratoga Panthers volleyball season ended with away games against top-ranked Baggs and Encampment. Losses in both of those challenging matches dashed the Panthers playoff hopes, and spelled the end of the season for Saratoga. "I don't know what to say, we had two of the toughest teams to play our last weekend," coach Shayley Love said. Against Baggs on Friday, Love said, "We didn't play horribly by any means. We put up a fight the first couple of... Full story

  • Streak ends, Lady Tigers still make postseason play

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers volleyball team saw their impressive win streak interrupted by Farson-Eden Friday, but the Tigers secured a berth in postseason play regardless, and also ended Saratoga's season Saturday. The undefeated Tigers lost in Farson-Eden in four sets, ending the varsity squad's uninterrupted string of 23 victories. The loss did not erode the team's standing in its division however, where it is still ranked No. 1. In the Farson Match, the Tigers lost the first set 16-25. It... Full story

  • Panthers football to taste postseason play

    Max Miller|Oct 26, 2016

A poem was read, then a dozen yellow and purple balloons drifted away into the darkening Wyoming sky last Friday night. It was halftime during a Saratoga High School football game against the Wind River Cougars, and when the six Panther seniors walked out to center field to be honored with their families, they knew it could be their last appearance in pads. In notching a 31-14 victory over Wind River, however, the Saratoga squad forestalled that final day by at least a week. The victory punched... Full story

  • Trick or treating for others

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

A group of students from Saratoga High School’s (SHS) Future Business Leaders (FBLA) chapter and the National Honors Society (NHS) will be holding a food drive on Halloween to benefit the Saratoga Food Bank. Monday, 6:30-8:30 p.m., when many will be out trick-or-treating, members of the FBLA and NHS will be dressed in business attire visiting homes around town to ask for canned or other non-perishable foods to donate to the food bank, SHS Senior Alicia Zaragoza, one of the students involved, said. “I just really like the concept behind it,... Full story
